A thrilling Old Firm derby concluded the Scottish Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon. Celtic remain on track for a domestic treble under Ange Postecoglou, having already seen off their fiercest rivals in the League Cup final last month and with an almost unassailable 13-point lead at the Premiership summit.

And they did it again on Sunday, with Jota’s back-post header on the stroke of half-time from Daizen Maeda’s fantastic cross punishing some dreadful defensive errors. Celtic have now not lost any of their last six Old Firm derbies, with Michael Beale still yet to claim his first Old Firm triumph. Rangers now have no chance at any silverware this term and face Celtic for the final time in the League at Ibrox on May 13.

Celtic’s lone domestic loss of the season came way back in September and they will be massive favourite over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final on June 3, with the Championship side having seen off third-tier Falkirk at Hampden yesterday in a repeat of the 2015 final. There is no question who Rangers will be fearing the most in that Celtic side this afternoon.

Hoops top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi has netted 29 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions so far this term and has scored against Rangers for fun.

The Japanese international has five in his last three Old Firm games, including back-to-back braces in the League Cup final and in the 3-2 Premiership thriller at Celtic Park earlier this month.

Michael Beale said of him this week: “I don’t remember Kyogo missing a chance (against us). I do remember us having opportunities (against Celtic) that we missed. Over the season, he’s probably been the most outstanding player in the league and that will probably be shown at the end.

“They have won two competitions and he has been the outstanding player. He has taken his chances. There is a stat on how we’ve had the most shots and the most shots on target. We’re not a million miles away from Celtic either when it comes to clean sheets.

“But a clinical number nine is one the reasons why Celtic have done well this season. He’s obviously an excellent player.”

Beale ‘super-positive’ on Rangers future despite derby failures

Both Old Firm rivals had been in incredible form since the mid-season World Cup break, though Rangers saw any chances of an extremely unlikely last-gasp title overhaul ended by a 3-2 loss at Celtic Park earlier this month and also lost to Aberdeen in the Premiership for the first time since 2018 at Pittodrie in their first post-split game last weekend.

But Beale is adamant that he has made significant progress at Ibrox since being hired as the successor to the sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst back in November, despite being winless in four games against Celtic now.

“We've won a lot of football games. I think in 23 games we've won 19 and until a couple of weeks ago their record looked strong,” Beale said.

"We've had a couple of defeats that have been hard to take the last couple of weeks. I think progress has been made in terms of we're much clearer now in the decisions that we need to make this summer.

"Those decisions have obviously clearly been on-going in the background. We know where we need to recruit and the areas we need to improve.

"Obviously, this will be the fourth game (with him in charge) against the team that's in front of you and you have a good idea of what you need, maybe to overcome them.

"I think progress has been made, there's a lot of harmony behind the scenes. There's obviously been change within the club structurally as well and that's ongoing but I'm super-positive about the future."

Michael Beale, meanwhile, insists that his Rangers players have nothing to prove at Hampden this afternoon, though urged them to take the opportunity to potentially go on and lift the Scottish Cup once again.

Whoever comes out on top in today’s derby will be an overwhelming favourite to beat second-tier Inverness in the showpiece on May 21.

"I don't think they have to prove anything to me, maybe to themselves. It's a big opportunity as a player,” Beale said. "We're at a club where there's an opportunity to win.

"And in your career as a player, whatever age you are, there's only a certain amount of years that you have an opportunity to win, and depending on whether you're the youngest player, the oldest player in the squad, you've got more, you've got less.

"I think this weekend's a big opportunity for our team to win a semi-final and take us to the final. After that, you'd have to go and perform again there as well.

"They don't have to prove anything to me, maybe themselves and maybe to the fans. That will to win, that's what they signed up for, coming here.

"This season we're going to finish second in the league, we're runners-up in one competition, we want to go and win the cup, that's clear.

"It will be bitterly disappointing if we don't but we have to keep moving forward."

McGregor urges ‘calm’ Celtic amid Old Firm chaos

Celtic certainly have had Rangers’ number so far this season and haven’t loss any of their last seven Old Firm derbies.

But the last contest was truly chaotic at Parkhead earlier this month and captain Callum McGregor has urged his team to remain calm amid all the inevitable drama this afternoon.

"That is the challenge," he said. "You have got to have a calm head and see the detail behind the game and how you can progress the ball forward into the areas that you want.

"Of course you have all this chaos, all the hype of the fixture and it's about trying to stay calm within that and implement the game plan we feel can be effective.

"It is about having the personality to stay calm and put your foot on the ball and make some passes and gain control of the game but, as always, it's easier said than done."

“All three boys have missed a bit recently and are itching to get involved.

Michael Beale remains without the likes of Steven Davis, Tom Lawrence, Kemar Roofe, Filip Helander and Nnamdi Ofoborh.

After Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle booked their place in next month’s showpiece yesterday by breezing past third-tier Falkirk, today it’s the turn of the big guns as Rangers and Celtic collide in another mammoth Old Firm derby.

Celtic are hoping to take a giant step towards a domestic treble in Glasgow this afternoon with the League Cup trophy already safely in the bag and a huge 13-point lead at the Scottish Premiership summit, having dominated the Old Firm clashes this season and not lost a domestic game since all the way back in September.

However, holders Rangers will be desperate to deny them that opportunity and take their own final chance at silverware in 2022/23, with Michael Beale very eager indeed for his first-ever derby success on a grand stage.
