Rangers vs Celtic LIVE!

A thrilling Old Firm derby concluded the Scottish Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon. Celtic remain on track for a domestic treble under Ange Postecoglou, having already seen off their fiercest rivals in the League Cup final last month and with an almost unassailable 13-point lead at the Premiership summit.

And they did it again on Sunday, with Jota’s back-post header on the stroke of half-time from Daizen Maeda’s fantastic cross punishing some dreadful defensive errors. Celtic have now not lost any of their last six Old Firm derbies, with Michael Beale still yet to claim his first Old Firm triumph. Rangers now have no chance at any silverware this term and face Celtic for the final time in the League at Ibrox on May 13.

Celtic’s lone domestic loss of the season came way back in September and they will be massive favourite over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final on June 3, with the Championship side having seen off third-tier Falkirk at Hampden yesterday in a repeat of the 2015 final. Follow Celtic vs Rangers reaction live below!

It’s all over! Jota’s first-half header seals Celtic’s latest Old Firm derby win and a place in the Scottish Cup final.

They will face Inverness Caledonian Thistle back at Hampden Park on June 3, huge favourites to complete a first domestic treble since the 2019/20 campaign.

Relentless!

For holders Rangers, that’s season over with the League Cup final already lost and a 13-point deficit in the Premiership title race. They won’t win any trophies this term.

That’s now six Old Firm derbies without a win. Michael Beale is still yet to taste victory in this fixture as a manager.

He will get one final chance this season in the League at Ibrox on May 13.

Rangers 0-1 Celtic

15:25 , George Flood

92 mins: An easy take from Hart to claim a cross intended for Sakala.

Ralston now down after a knock, taking a bit more time off the clock.

Celtic fans in great voice as they anticipate another huge Old Firm triumph.

15:24 , George Flood

90 minutes: FIVE minutes added on. Rangers need a Hampden hero.

Celtic look very comfortable indeed just at the moment.

15:23 , George Flood

89 mins: Carter-Vickers and Starfelt have been immense in the heart of that Celtic defence this afternoon.

The former in particular has been brilliant in the air, repelling the latest dangerous Rangers cross in emphatic fashion.

He’s won everything slung into the box.

Over from Yilmaz! Time is slipping away on Rangers’ Scottish Cup final hopes and their season in general...

15:20 , George Flood

87 mins: Celtic are doing very well on the ball here to kill the clock and deny Rangers any late momentum in search of that equaliser.

But captain Callum McGregor is booked for bringing down Hagi.

15:16 , George Flood

84 mins: Superb play from Matondo to outfox Carter-Vickers and tee up Arfield, whose curved strike fails to test Hart.

There will be no goal against Rangers today for Kyogo.

He’s replaced by Oh Hyeon-gyu.

15:15 , George Flood

83 mins: Morelos is the man to make way for Hagi.

A really disappointing display from the Colombian this afternoon.

15:15 , George Flood

82 mins: Cantwell takes a not-so-subtle swipe at Haksabanovic, who stays on his feet and then fails to release Maeda with another overhit pass.

Cantwell then deservedly has his name taken.

15:13 , George Flood

80 mins: Maeda, perhaps frustrated after an overhit pass from Iwata when almost through on goal, is booked for a needless barge on Cantwell.

Into the final 10 minutes at Hampden! Is there a late twist in the tale to come?

15:12 , George Flood

78 mins: Really risky stuff from Rangers as Tavernier is caught out by Mooy and Goldson by Maeda.

Maeda’s deflected effort goes wide before Starfelt is denied a game-clinching goal for Celtic as Davies blocks his header.

Ianis Hagi will be on soon for Rangers.

15:08 , George Flood

76 mins: Rangers are really knocking on the door now, with a strong hand from Hart before brilliant defending from Carter-Vickers to turn Ridvan’s fierce cross behind.

Earlier, Maeda had a golden chance to release Kyogo but couldn’t find the pass.

Celtic repel the latest corner as Rangers’ fans roar their team on.

15:07 , George Flood

75 mins: Rangers make a double change with 15 minutes to go at Hampden.

Ridvan and Matondo replace Barisic and Raskin.

15:06 , George Flood

73 mins: Sakala has offered a lot to Rangers since coming on at half-time, including pace, directness and purpose.

However, his final ball and finish has been dreadfully lacking so far. There’s been a couple of really wild efforts to go with that glaring miss into the side netting.

15:04 , George Flood

71 mins: Here come Rangers again and Cantwell feeds Barisic, whose accurate left-wing cross is headed into the ground and onto the roof of the net by Tavernier.

The Rangers skipper scored twice in the five-goal Premiership thriller at Celtic Park earlier this month, including a stunning free-kick, going over the century mark of goals in blue.

15:03 , George Flood

69 mins: A couple of late challenges flying in now that the referee needs to keep on top of as we head into the final 20 minutes of this breathless semi-final at Hampden.

Rangers are piling on the pressure again, with Sakala leading the charge and Morelos involved plenty.

But they just can’t find the finish or effective final ball at the moment.

Watch: Tavernier hits woodwork for Rangers

15:00 , George Flood

So, so close...

14:59 , George Flood

65 mins: Iwata, Mooy and Haksabanovic are all on for Celtic now.

Off go O’Riley, Hatate and goalscorer Jota.

14:57 , George Flood

64 mins: Huge drama at both ends! Kyogo fires narrowly off target for Celtic.

Rangers then pour forward and Tavernier’s excellent low strike hits the far post after positive play from Sakala, who drove past Taylor to create the chance.

But then Sakala somehow puts the rebound into the side netting with Hart struggling badly to get back over.

That should be 1-1. Agonising for Rangers.

 (PA)
(PA)

14:56 , George Flood

62 mins: Cantwell drags back Callum McGregor and is incensed to have been penalised, though I think that free-kick was for a poor challenge on Hatate a moment before.

Morelos is way too sloppy in possession for Rangers again and Celtic almost manage to release Kyogo.

There are three Celtic substitutes getting ready to come on.

14:53 , George Flood

60 mins: Hart makes his first real save of the afternoon on the hour mark, getting down to turn Arfield’s fizzing low strike wide of the post.

Celtic can’t get the corner clear and it’s played back to Lundstram, who misses the target with an ambitious effort.

14:51 , George Flood

58 mins: Rangers steam down the right flank and Morelos goes down in the middle as he tries to reach an enticing cross.

He wants a penalty, but the referee isn’t interested.

Sakala’s tame header from a Tavernier cross is then easily gathered by Hart. Good pressure from Ralston.

I think that came off Sakala’s shoulder in the end.

14:49 , George Flood

56 mins: 10 minutes into this second half and it’s been all Rangers.

Celtic can’t get on the ball, until Kyogo’s early shot forces a save from Allan McGregor!

McGregor had to get down low to his left to repel the ball wide after it had skipped up off the wet surface.

Not a clean strike from Kyogo.

14:46 , George Flood

54 mins: Celtic are temporarily down to 10 men as Johnstone heads off, unable to continue.

Anthony Ralston is now on in his place.

14:45 , George Flood

52 mins: A break in play now as Celtic regroup following a painful collision between Johnston and Barisic.

Johnstone has come off worse here and might have to go off.

Celtic have not started this second half well at all.

14:44 , George Flood

50 mins: Close to a Rangers leveller!

Morelos flicks-on Cantwell’s cross to the back post and it’s a crucial intervention from Carter-Vickers to prevent the Colombian from then touching home with Sakala also lurking.

Carter-Vickers takes a painful one from Morelos while making that goal-saving challenge and is down.

I think Morelos and Sakala might have been offside there you know, so it may well not have counted anyway.

Some afters between Morelos and Hart.

14:42 , George Flood

49 mins: This has been a promising start to the second period from Rangers.

Celtic haven’t got going yet and have had to face four set-piece deliveries into the box already since the interval.

14:37 , George Flood

Sakala is coming on for Rangers at half-time. Kent off. That’s their second change after the injured Tillman made way for Arfield in the first half.

Back underway at Hampden.

14:30 , George Flood

Should Rangers be down to 10 men at Hampden?

Barisic could easily have got a second booking for diving on the stroke of half-time...

Watch: Jota punishes sloppy Rangers

14:29 , George Flood

14:28 , George Flood

The Treble-chasers lead at the break thanks to Jota’s header after a complete defensive meltdown from Rangers.

Michael Beale will be furious with so many lapses in concentration in such a short space of time.

Half-time

14:24 , George Flood

Rangers 0-1 Celtic

14:23 , George Flood

48 mins: Rangers are pushing for a swift equaliser on the stroke of half-time!

They force a corner and Barisic goes down looking for a penalty under minimal contact from Kyogo.

That was never a spot-kick... should he get a second yellow for simulation?!

The referee blows for half-time instead. And breathe!

14:22 , George Flood

45 mins: Three minutes of added time at the end of this engrossing first half at Hampden.

14:22 , George Flood

44 mins: Beale sent Fashion Sakala out to warm-up immediately after that goal went in.

You sense a half-time change from Rangers.

GOAL! Rangers 0-1 Celtic | Jota 42'

14:16 , George Flood

42 mins: Deadlock broken before half-time - and it’s an absolutely dreadful goal for Rangers to concede.

They aren’t alert to a quick Celtic free-kick and Callum McGregor comes forward, cutting in and felled by Raskin.

There’s no free-kick given though and Rangers hesitate, leading to Maeda picking up the ball and providing a fine cross to the back post.

Tavernier is all over the place as Jota ghosts in to head home his fourth goal in Old Firm derbies - and 14th in general this season - from close range.

Delirium and an explosion of noise from the green and white end of Hampden. Michael Beale will be furious though - his side sleeping everywhere.

Woeful from Rangers. What a ball from Maeda though, playing it almost blind.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

14:15 , George Flood

40 mins: Morelos can’t get a shot away as Rangers earn a corner that is quickly cleared by Celtic.

Rangers then get away with some very sloppy play in a dangerous area, Allan McGregor eventually able to clear his lines.

14:14 , George Flood

39 mins: That’s a chance for Celtic as Maeda weaves down the left and delivers a perfect cross for Jota.

However, the Portuguese’s first touch is dreadful as he allows the ball to escape under his foot and away to safety.

A reprieve for Rangers.

14:12 , George Flood

37 mins: Taylor goes down holding his face after a collision with Morelos, but there’s no action taken.

Celtic are looking to release the dangerous Kyogo but the Rangers defence is looking very well-marshalled at the moment.

14:10 , George Flood

34 mins: Tillman hits the deck again and is in no position to continue here.

He receives more treatment and finally limps off for good.

Scott Arfield is on in his place.

14:08 , George Flood

32 mins: This first 30 minutes at Hampden has flown by in a fast and furious blur.

Still goalless as it stands.

Tillman is back on for Rangers now, but he’s still clearly struggling.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

14:07 , George Flood

30 mins: Tillman has just gone through the back of Taylor and hurt himself in the process.

Not sure the American is going to be able to continue here with Sakala, Kamara, Arfield and Wright all warming up down the touchline for Rangers.

14:05 , George Flood

28 mins: Johnston brings the ball out well for Celtic and picks out Jota, who just can’t release Kyogo as Allan McGregor gratefully claims.

Barisic is in for a long afternoon against Jota now on that yellow card.

14:03 , George Flood

26 mins: Two saves from Allan McGregor to keep out drives by Johnston and Jota!

Comfortable enough in the end but had to be made.

Barisic receives the first yellow card of this Old Firm derby for a very poor sliding challenge on O’Riley.

14:00 , George Flood

25 mins: A bit of needle there involving Morelos and Taylor.

Nothing too serious though.

13:58 , George Flood

22 mins: Celtic will need to cut off that supply line from Barisic out on the Rangers left.

He plays a fine early cross for Cantwell, but Tillman doesn’t anticipate the smart knockdown inside the box and the potential chance is lost.

Another searching cross is thumped clear by Carter-Vickers. A good spell for Rangers this.

13:56 , George Flood

20 mins: A couple of decent deliveries from Barisic, but the second is headed away emphatically by Starfelt.

Non-stop noise from both ends at Hampden still.

Celtic are under the cosh at the moment...

13:54 , George Flood

18 mins: Rangers are enjoying a promising spell of possession now and Barisic earns a corner after a decent switch of possession.

Carter-Vickers repels the first corner at the back post.

13:52 , George Flood

15 mins: A foul by the retreating Tillman offers Celtic the chance to whip a dangerous free-kick into the box.

O’Riley’s fierce delivery is headed over his own crossbar by Goldson, who is then fouled by fellow centre-half Carter-Vickers as the two defenders jostle for supremacy at the corner.

The pace of this semi-final is unreal. Hard to keep up!

13:50 , George Flood

13 mins: Goldson stands up well to the considerable threat of Kyogo inside the Rangers box.

Celtic keep the pressure on but Maeda cannot guide a header on target at the back post after an early leap.

13:47 , George Flood

11 mins: Determined defending from Rangers to squeeze out Maeda near the byline and earn a pressure-relieving goal kick.

Good ball from O’Riley.

Cantwell is back on and fine to continue, though he’s angry not to have picked up the free-kick.

13:45 , George Flood

10 mins: That’s a lovely ball from Callum McGregor to O’Riley, but Celtic can’t fashion a chance inside the box.

The referee is letting so much go, including a clear push by Johnston on Kent.

Cantwell is now down in the centre circle and will need treatment.

13:43 , George Flood

8 mins: This is fizzing, end-to-end, mile-a-minute stuff that you can’t take your eyes off.

But both sides suffering from a lack of final ball and end product at the moment.

13:40 , George Flood

5 mins: Thankfully the smoke is finally beginning to properly clear at Hampden.

It’s a first five minutes played at a typical 100mph pace amid a tremendous atmosphere, with challenges galore and decent spells of possession for both teams.

Rangers are looking to slip in a ball over the top, while Kyogo plays a delicious pass for compatriot Maeda, whose first touch lets him down inside the box and Allan McGregor is able to scamper off his line to gather.

13:38 , George Flood

3 mins: Late replacement referee Don Robertson has been happy to let a lot go already here with the fiesty challenges flying in early, as you might expect from any Old Firm game - let alone a cup semi-final!

But that’s very naughty from Lundstram on Kyogo and he’s lucky to avoid a yellow.

13:36 , George Flood

1 min: A chance for Rangers straight off the bat!

Tavernier, Tillman and Cantwell all combine nicely to tee up Raskin, whose fierce drive is deflected wide for the game’s first corner.

Celtic scramble clear.

13:35 , George Flood

The floodlights are struggling to cut through the smoke in the wet afternoon gloom at Hampden.

But now we are finally underway!

So difficult to see anything still...

After an agonising wait in the tunnel, here come the teams at Hampden!

Amazing passion, noise and intensity in the stands.

Colour and smoke bombs and firecrackers at both ends.

What an unbelievable scene.

Late referee switch

13:27 , George Flood

There’s been a very late change to the officiating team, with Willie Collum injuring himself in the warm-up.

Don Robertson will take charge of this semi-final tie instead.

13:22 , George Flood

It really is a tremendous atmosphere at both ends of Hampden, where Celtic and Rangers fans have a 50/50 split on tickets.

So good to see given that away fans can’t currently attend Old Firm games in the Premiership.

Postecoglou confirms Abada fitness setback

13:21 , George Flood

Ange Postecoglou confirms in his pre-match interview with Viaplay Sports that Liel Abada pulled up sore in training yesterday, hence his total absence from the Celtic squad this afternoon.

The Israeli winger has not played since the 3-1 home win over Hibernian on March 18 due to a quad issue.

He had been back in training this week alongside Reo Hatate and Jota, before suffering that frustrating setback on Saturday.

‘Outstanding’ Kyogo looking to inflict more Rangers misery

13:01 , George Flood

There is no question who Rangers will be fearing the most in that Celtic side this afternoon.

Hoops top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi has netted 29 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions so far this term and has scored against Rangers for fun.

The Japanese international has five in his last three Old Firm games, including back-to-back braces in the League Cup final and in the 3-2 Premiership thriller at Celtic Park earlier this month.

Michael Beale said of him this week: “I don’t remember Kyogo missing a chance (against us). I do remember us having opportunities (against Celtic) that we missed. Over the season, he’s probably been the most outstanding player in the league and that will probably be shown at the end.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

“They have won two competitions and he has been the outstanding player. He has taken his chances. There is a stat on how we’ve had the most shots and the most shots on target. We’re not a million miles away from Celtic either when it comes to clean sheets.

“But a clinical number nine is one the reasons why Celtic have done well this season. He’s obviously an excellent player.”

Rangers swap two as Goldson and Kent return

12:45 , George Flood

Michael Beale also makes two changes to the Rangers team stunned by Aberdeen at Pittodrie last weekend.

Connor Goldson is fit to return in defence and replaces John Souttar, while Ryan Kent also returns at the expense of Fashion Sakala.

Scott Wright is also back on the bench, though there is still no involvement for Antonio Colak or Alex Lowry.

Teenage trio Leon King, Zak Lovelace and Bailey Rice all exit the matchday squad.

Two Celtic changes as Hatate and Jota return

12:39 , George Flood

So Ange Postecoglou makes two changes to the Celtic side held to that unlikely home draw by Motherwell last time out.

Fit-again duo Reo Hatate and Jota are both ready to return to the starting XI, with Tomoki Iwata and Sead Haksabanovic both dropping to the bench.

Liel Abada was also back in training this week though isn’t even named as a substitute this afternoon.

Also dropping out of the squad are Alexandro Bernabei and teenager Ben Summers.

Rangers lineup

12:22 , George Flood

Starting XI: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Davies, Barisic, Lundstram, Raskin, Cantwell, Tillman, Kent, Morelos

Subs: McLaughlin, Ridvan, Hagi, Souttar, Matondo, Kamara, Wright, Sakala, Arfield

12:14 , George Flood

The prize surely on offer to today’s winners, bar an extraordinary upset from Inverness at Hampden next month.

Rangers are the current holders and 34-time winners of the Scottish Cup, having bounced back from their Europa League final heartbreak against Eintracht Frankfurt to beat Hearts 2-0 in last year’s showpiece, extra-time goals from Ryan Jack and Scott Wright sealing the trophy for the first time since 2009.

Celtic hold the record with 40 Scottish Cup triumphs, though the last of those was in 2020, when they also beat Hearts on penalties after a six-goal extra-time thriller.

12 months ago, Rangers came from behind to beat their fiercest rivals in the semi-finals, with an extra-time own goal from Carl Starfelt under pressure from Fashion Sakala securing a hard-fought 2-1 triumph after Greg Taylor’s opener had been cancelled out by substitute Scott Arfield.

Celtic beat Morton, St Mirren and Hearts to get to another semi-final, while Rangers overcame St Johnstone, Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers.

(PA)

12:01 , George Flood

Treble-chasing Celtic have still only lost one domestic match all season, a 2-0 Premiership reverse at St Mirren on September 18 that was their first Premiership loss for some 364 days.

They had won 17 consecutive games and 21 in a row in domestic action at home before last weekend’s surprise 1-1 draw against Motherwell, with Kevin van Veen’s superb individual effort in the second half cancelling out Callum McGregor’s deflected strike.

But the Bhoys still only need three points from their post-split games to wrap up a 53rd league title that would move them within two of Rangers’ record 55.

Celtic have not lost any of their last seven Old Firm derbies meanwhile, winning five of them. This season, they have played four and won three against Rangers, with Beale’s Old Firm record so far reading one draw and two defeats.

Their final meeting of the season comes at Ibrox on May 13.

Beale ‘super-positive’ on Rangers future despite derby failures

11:47 , George Flood

Both Old Firm rivals had been in incredible form since the mid-season World Cup break, though Rangers saw any chances of an extremely unlikely last-gasp title overhaul ended by a 3-2 loss at Celtic Park earlier this month and also lost to Aberdeen in the Premiership for the first time since 2018 at Pittodrie in their first post-split game last weekend.

But Beale is adamant that he has made significant progress at Ibrox since being hired as the successor to the sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst back in November, despite being winless in four games against Celtic now.

“We've won a lot of football games. I think in 23 games we've won 19 and until a couple of weeks ago their record looked strong,” Beale said.

"We've had a couple of defeats that have been hard to take the last couple of weeks. I think progress has been made in terms of we're much clearer now in the decisions that we need to make this summer.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

"Those decisions have obviously clearly been on-going in the background. We know where we need to recruit and the areas we need to improve.

"Obviously, this will be the fourth game (with him in charge) against the team that's in front of you and you have a good idea of what you need, maybe to overcome them.

"I think progress has been made, there's a lot of harmony behind the scenes. There's obviously been change within the club structurally as well and that's ongoing but I'm super-positive about the future."

Beale urges Rangers to take Scottish Cup chance

11:34 , George Flood

Michael Beale, meanwhile, insists that his Rangers players have nothing to prove at Hampden this afternoon, though urged them to take the opportunity to potentially go on and lift the Scottish Cup once again.

Whoever comes out on top in today’s derby will be an overwhelming favourite to beat second-tier Inverness in the showpiece on May 21.

"I don't think they have to prove anything to me, maybe to themselves. It's a big opportunity as a player,” Beale said. "We're at a club where there's an opportunity to win.

"And in your career as a player, whatever age you are, there's only a certain amount of years that you have an opportunity to win, and depending on whether you're the youngest player, the oldest player in the squad, you've got more, you've got less.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

"I think this weekend's a big opportunity for our team to win a semi-final and take us to the final. After that, you'd have to go and perform again there as well.

"They don't have to prove anything to me, maybe themselves and maybe to the fans. That will to win, that's what they signed up for, coming here.

"This season we're going to finish second in the league, we're runners-up in one competition, we want to go and win the cup, that's clear.

"It will be bitterly disappointing if we don't but we have to keep moving forward."

McGregor urges ‘calm’ Celtic amid Old Firm chaos

11:20 , George Flood

Celtic certainly have had Rangers’ number so far this season and haven’t loss any of their last seven Old Firm derbies.

But the last contest was truly chaotic at Parkhead earlier this month and captain Callum McGregor has urged his team to remain calm amid all the inevitable drama this afternoon.

"That is the challenge," he said. "You have got to have a calm head and see the detail behind the game and how you can progress the ball forward into the areas that you want.

"Of course you have all this chaos, all the hype of the fixture and it's about trying to stay calm within that and implement the game plan we feel can be effective.

"It is about having the personality to stay calm and put your foot on the ball and make some passes and gain control of the game but, as always, it's easier said than done."

Celtic team news

11:10 , George Flood

Celtic, meanwhile, have received a huge triple boost today with Reo Hatate, Jota and Liel Abada all passed fit by Ange Postecoglou after coming through a week of training unscathed.

“It’s hugely beneficial for us as a group. I mean, even training this week has gone up a level because three more quality players have joined in training,” said the Bhoys boss.

“All three boys have missed a bit recently and are itching to get involved.

“It certainly helps, not just with the starting XI but the ability to then go to the bench and impact the game.”

But today’s game will come too soon for James Forrest, who is a week or so away from making his comeback from a muscle issue.

There is a familiar look to the early Rangers team news for today’s semi-final at Hampden.

There are also doubts over the fitness of Antonio Colak, with Ryan Jack also sidelined.

However, Ryan Kent, Connor Goldson, Scott Wright and Alex Lowry are all expected to be fit.

Good afternoon and welcome to Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of the Scottish Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park!

After Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle booked their place in next month’s showpiece yesterday by breezing past third-tier Falkirk, today it’s the turn of the big guns as Rangers and Celtic collide in another mammoth Old Firm derby.

Celtic are hoping to take a giant step towards a domestic treble in Glasgow this afternoon with the League Cup trophy already safely in the bag and a huge 13-point lead at the Scottish Premiership summit, having dominated the Old Firm clashes this season and not lost a domestic game since all the way back in September.

However, holders Rangers will be desperate to deny them that opportunity and take their own final chance at silverware in 2022/23, with Michael Beale very eager indeed for his first-ever derby success on a grand stage.

Kick-off this afternoon is at 1:30pm BST, so stay tuned for all the latest team news, build-up and live updates! This will be anything but dull.
