Realm & IGN Strike Podcast Deal Including Scripted Adaptation Of Justin Roiland Videogame ‘High On Life’ From Squanch Games

EXCLUSIVE: Realm, the scripted podcast company behind series such as Harley Quinn & The Joker: Sound Mind and The Flash: Escape The Midnight Circus, has struck a wide-ranging deal with IGN to develop and distribute audio series.

The deal includes a scripted podcast adaptation of videogame High on Life, which was created by embattled Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

The two companies will collaborate on development, production, distribution, and monetization of podcast titles and Realm will also represent over 2,500 hours of content in IGN’s existing slate including unscripted podcasts Nintendo Voice Chat, Unlocked, Beyond and Game Scoop.

High on Life is a comedic, first-person shooter game that takes place in a sci-world that features talking guns. It was created by Roiland and developed and published by Squanch Games, which the Rick and Morty co-creator founded in 2016. Sources told Deadline that Roiland is not involved in the podcast adaptation.

Earlier this year, Adult Swim severed ties with Roiland after domestic violence charges on Rick and Morty and Hulu did the same on Solar Opposites, which he also co-created. The Orange County District Attorney’s office dismissed the charges in March but Roiland was later accused of sexual assault in a separate case.

“We’re deeply excited about the opportunity to partner with IGN, a leader in the entertainment and games space, as we continue to find new ways to delight our passionate audiences,” said Molly Barton, CEO and Co-Founder, Realm. “This deal is an organic extension of our commitment to fan-first storytelling and we believe in the extensive creative and business potential of this mutually beneficial relationship.”

“At IGN, we believe that scripted podcasts are a natural extension of games storytelling,” said Karl Stewart, 1TwentyFour’s SVP, Strategic Partnerships and Innovation. “As a podcasting leader, Realm is a company whose commitment to innovation and creativity lines up with IGN’s vision for this explosive medium. As we looked to work with game developers to expand their worlds beyond the screen and between releases, Realm’s passion for the podcasting space truly aligns with ours. We’re excited to get out into the market and start building together.”
