Record number enter engineering competition

Schoolchildren in class — The competition is part of efforts to boost levels of STEM skills in school children [PA Media]

The winner of an engineering competition entered by more than 1,100 Jersey school children will be revealed later.

The Jersey Primary Engineering Awards encouraged pupils to submit "creative" engineering ideas.

The competition forms part of a drive to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills from an early age and is run by a partnership between the organisation Primary Engineering and Skills Jersey.

The ceremony will be hosted at Highlands College's Great Hall, after a record number of submissions.

Vice Adm Jerry Kyd CBE, Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, will attend as a guest and present winning pupils with their awards.

Last year's winner was a Year 6 pupil from FCJ Primary School who impressed the panel with an idea proposing self-generating electricity.

China anchors 'monster ship' in South China Sea, Philippine coast guard says
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Saturday that China's largest coastguard vessel has anchored in Manila's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea, and is meant to intimidate its smaller Asian neighbour.
