Reece Feldman Wore Everyone's Favorite Outfit at This Year's Met Gala
You may recognize Reece Feldman as his virtual presence, Guy with a Movie Camera, or you may recognize him as Guy Who Wore That Dope Thom Browne Look at the Met Gala. A few years ago, Feldman was a TikToker with a passion for film. He still is, but he’s also evolved into Hollywood’s greatest asset (or is it fear?): a Gen Zer with a large TikTok audience who’s in tune with both social media and the film industry. When Feldman is talking to your favorite A-list actors on red carpets, he’s unafraid in his fashion choices, seamlessly merging menswear traditions with a dose of the youthful and avant-garde. Think: a pleated skirt with a tailored jacket, or a gauzy, transparent button-up under a classic black blazer. If Feldman is any indication of the energy his generation is bringing to menswear, there’s good reason to be hopeful. Very hopeful. Here he answers our most pressing questions about style.
Going sockless with a suit?
Never.
Flip-flops?
No.
Earrings?
Yes. I don’t have any because you can’t see my ears, but earrings are cool.
Fun socks?
Fun socks are nice. I’m wearing little red socks today.
What was your aha moment when evolving your personal style?
When I watched Jurassic Park and realized I liked every outfit in it. Laura Dern with short shorts and the shirt tied. Jeff Goldblum in all black with the chest showing. Sam Neill with the cowboy hat. Then you have Attenborough wearing the white linen. I was just like, “Oh, everyone’s just dressed.” It’s so many different moods coming together.
What’s the difference between style and fashion?
I compare it to when people ask you your favorite movie versus the best movie. Fashion is what is best, which tends to be more objective. There are things in fashion I don’t always love, but I can admit that it’s smart and there’s thought behind it, whereas style is subjective. Style could be anything, like my favorite movies are. They don’t have to win Oscars, but it fits the person.
Who’s your style icon?
I really like what Princess Diana wore. Short shorts and big, oversized crewnecks and high white tube socks. I take a lot from her. Her style is iconic. Larry David also. He do be dressing. I want to be a grumpy old Jewish man one day, so I take a lot of notes from him.
Do trends matter?
No. Trends are nice, because it gives people something to talk about and it’s good for discourse, but no. Still, it’s fun to follow a trend, because things are popular for a reason. It’s like listening to a greatest-hits album. There’s nothing wrong with that.
What’s one thing that’s better to buy vintage?
Suits. Most of the suits I own are vintage. I’ll get them on eBay and have them tailored. It’s better material, and they’re made with care.
What’s one thing you buy over and over again?
Graphic tees. They’re just fun. I have one that has an Eames chair on it, because I love Eames chairs. And one that has a picture of a picket fence. I’m like, “Picket fences rock. I should definitely buy that.”
What’s worse, try hard or zero effort?
Zero effort. It’s nice to try, and I’d rather be overdressed for something, because that means I put in thought.
