Retired Chinese LOL pro Misaya is making a fortune online

If you think the eSports career of a League of Legends player ends when they step off of Summoner’s Rift, think again. Yes, they can go into coaching or analysis or casting. But that’s not where the real money is. In China, at least, retired gamers can make a fortune selling things online, according to a report on Sina Games.

The report looks at the probable income of Chinese League of Legends legend and former Team WE captain Misaya. Misaya didn’t share any numbers directly with the site, so the report can only make estimates. But because Misaya sells stuff on Taobao, which makes sales figures public, they can get a decent idea of how many of each item Misaya is selling, and what it probably costs him to procure it.

You can look at the specific figures in the Chinese report if you’re interested, but long story short: across three separate Taobao stores using his name to sell gaming peripherals, food, and clothing (respectively), Misaya is likely raking in somewhere around 800,000 RMB ($131,000) in profit every month. That would mean he’s making about $1.5 million a year just for kicking back and selling things online with his name.

Of course, a lot of that money won’t actually end up in Misaya’s pocket because he’s not sitting in a room somewhere, packing and shipping keyboards on his own. His shops are run by sophisticated companies, and they almost certainly take a hefty chunk of those profits to cover their overhead. Even so, though, between these shops and his other miscellaneous income, Misaya is probably earning more now than he ever was as a player.
