Richard Curtis has revealed that he recently wrote Notting Hill 2… but not as a movie.

The legendary comedy writer had one of his most iconic film hits with the original Notting Hill, which starred Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in a bittersweet romance between a bookstore owner and an American film star.

Fans have long hoped for some kind of follow-up to Notting Hill, and it sounds as if writer Curtis has been working to make it a reality.

In an interview with the Have You Seen? Podcast, Curtis confirmed he recently worked on an unconventional sequel.

"I was going to do it for Comic Relief… I wrote Notting Hill 2, which was going to be a 10-minute special set in the divorce lawyer’s office with Hugh and Julia splitting up, and then they both realised they loved each other again," he explained.

The short film hasn't yet seen the light of day but there's always the possibility it will get made eventually for either Children in Need or Red Nose Day.

Curtis, who co-founded Comic Relief with Sir Lenny Henry, previously revisited Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral as comedy shorts for Red Nose Day a few years back.

The filmmaker has been reflecting on the legacy of Love Actually, and has admitted he regrets weight jokes about Martine McCutcheon's character Natalie in the film.

"In my generation, calling someone 'chubby'... in Love Actually, there are endless jokes about that," he acknowledged.

"I think I was behind the curve and those jokes aren’t any longer funny. I don't feel I was malicious at the time but I feel I was unobservant and not as clever as I should have been."
