The Richest Town in America is Home to The World’s Most Famous Female Tech Billionaire

Long called home by tech billionaires like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Google’s Eric Schmidt, the richest town in America is Atherton, California, according to Bloomberg’s 2019 Richest Places Index. The Silicon Valley town boasts tree-lined streets with large, private lots and lavish homes in close proximity to Stanford University and the headquarters of Google, Facebook, and Tesla, making it appealing to America’s 21st century mega-wealthy.

And they’re only getting wealthier. In 2017, Atherton clocked in with an average household income of a whopping $450,696, up over $7,200 from last year’s ranking. Silicon Valley tech execs aren’t the only Americans getting richer: The entry level average household income for the top 100 places topped $200,000 this year, up from $190,000 two years ago. Even more staggering: All of the top 20 richest towns posted average household incomes above $300,000.

America’s third richest town is in Colorado: Cherry Hills Village, a Denver suburb with an average household income of $394,259. Another surprising finding? Four of the 25 richest towns in America, including the Village of Indian Hill, Ohio, a Cincinnati suburb with an average household income of $338,267, are in the Midwest.

Of the remaining top 25, 13 are in California (4) or the Northeast (9), making the tristate area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut the greatest concentration of wealth in the country. (Hello, old money.) Rounding out the top 25 richest towns are three in Texas, three more in the mid-Atlantic region, and one in Arizona.

Bloomberg compiled its Richest Places Index using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, evaluating inflation-adjusted household income data for all U.S. “places,” defined by the Census Bureau as having a minimum of 2,000 households. Unincorporated areas and county subdivisions were excluded; nearly 6,250 places met the criteria. Bloomberg also excluded households without any type of income when calculating average household income for each place.
