Ring integrating NFC is latest tech wear to get crowdfunding boost

Wireless NFC technology, which is making its appearance on more and more smartphones, enables two devices to exchange data without any cables or direct contact between them. A young English programmer came up with the idea of integrating an NFC chip into a ring, giving the wearer constant access to NFC. He launched his project on Kickstarter, the crowd-funding platform, and has already brought in the equivalent of over US$160,000, while also getting coverage in a host of tech blogs and publications.

John McLear developed this ring, which contains personal data as well as public information to be shared with other users and services. The ring could serve as a key fob for unlocking mobile devices or even doors, as well as allow a wearer to easily exchange contacts or other information with a new acquaintance.

While he required only £30,000 (US$46,000) in start-up capital, John McLear has already brought in over £110,000 (£169,000) in donations. The first rings will be shipped to the most generous donors as early as this August.
