Rio Ngumoha: Liverpool transfer chief make vow amid links with Chelsea wonderkid

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes says the club will "always be opportunistic" in the transfer window amid links with Chelsea wonderkid Rio Ngumoha.

Hughes has only recently moved to the Reds, tasked with overseeing the club's transfer activity alongside CEO of Football Michael Edwards and new manager Arne Slot, but is now hard at work overhauling the squad left behind by departing head coach Jurgen Klopp.

Slot is yet to add to his first-team squad but Liverpool are reportedly hoping to poach 15-year-old Ngumoha, considered one of English football's hottest properties.

Discussing his working relationship with Slot, Hughes said: "We've been in conversations daily. On many things: logistics, organisation and, of course, preparing the transfer window. That's something we'll know more about when we go on.”

He added: “With the window open, we'll always be opportunistic if we can ... Then, like always, when August starts and coaches have had more time to work with players, I think the opinions will then be more set at football clubs.

“You then may see a situation in August, like in previous seasons, there is a little bit of a hurry to get things done and to make sure everyone's squads are in order.

“I don’t think this will be any different, but who knows what will transpire economically? It is hard to say and speak for other clubs. I see a quiet July, then a crescendo in August."
