River City star Iain Robertson has urged fans to "go see yer doctor" after an infection led to him undergoing emergency surgery.

The 41-year-old actor - who has played Stevie O'Hara in the Scottish soap opera since 2017 - issued a warning to his 18.5k followers revealing he had been dealing with the problem himself for years as he had not wanted to bother the doctor.

Robertson tweeted: "Found myself an unexpected guest of the NHS this week...

"It’s worth saying to folk (particularly guys my age), that this was a recurring intermittent infection that I had been dealing with myself for (literally) years & not wanting to bother the doctor with. In a matter of hours from showing GP - I was on an operating table.

"GO SEE YER DOCTORS LADS! [sic]"

The actor - who took over the role of O'Hara in the Glasgow-set soap in 2017 - was treated at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

He added: "I’d really like to thank the amazing nurses - they really were amazing btw - & the doctors & staff at the QEUH who took amazing care of me & so swiftly dealt with problem [sic]."

Robertson entered the spotlight as a child star playing Lex in 1996 Glasgow gang film Small Faces.

The actor - who divorced his wife in 2009 after three years of marriage - confessed earlier this year how lockdown had put a strain on his current relationship.

He told the Daily Record: “Last April my mental health was not in a good place. I had things going on in my personal life and relationship. We were struggling.

“I struggled in lockdown and my partner and I were pretty much stuck in the same house. She was having days where she wasn’t leaving the house because she was working from home.

“As well the stress in our lives and restrictions in filming River City, I was becoming a reactive person and had worked very hard over the years to not be.”

But after getting back out to pursue his love of hillwalking again he revealed: “Life is much better. The hard thing I found with lockdowns is you think you’re OK. We were in denial that the pandemic and restrictions were getting to us. Getting out in the hills is my saving grace.”
