River Valley High death: Accused remanded at Changi Prison, can meet family and lawyer
SINGAPORE — The 16-year-old River Valley High School student accused of murdering a 13-year-old schoolmate will be remanded at Changi Prison, with his family and lawyer able to visit him, the court heard on Tuesday (31 August).
The teen, who cannot be named due to his age, is accused of causing the death of the Secondary 1 victim at a toilet on Level 4 of Block D of River Valley High School at 6 Boon Lay Avenue, between 11.16am and 11.44am on 19 July.
The prosecution told District Judge Brenda Tan that the accused no longer needed to be remanded at Central Division at Police Cantonment Complex, and applied for an adjournment until sometime after his High Court pre-trial conference on 12 October.
The teen's lawyer Sunil Sudheesan said he had no objections to the application. The teen was also represented by lawyers Diana Ngiam and Joyce Khoo from the same law firm, Quahe Woo & Palmer LLC.
He said to the accused, who appeared via videolink, "Can you please explain to him that he will be (remanded in Changi Prison) and his family and I will be able to visit him?"
The teen then nodded and said he understood. He will return to court on 19 October for a re-mention of his case, with bail not offered to him.
The penalty for murder is death. Under the Criminal Procedure Code, offenders below 18 will be sentenced to life imprisonment if found guilty.
