Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, the grandson of Robert De Niro, has died aged 19.

The news was confirmed by Robert’s eldest daughter Drena, who shared a photo of Leandro on Instagram along with a message.

"My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly," she began. "You have been my joy, my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you.

"I don't know how to live without you but I'll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama. You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you. I’m so sorry my baby, I’m so sorry @carlosmare. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy."

No cause of death has been revealed.

De Niro, best known for his roles in Raging Bull and Goodfellas, recently welcomed the birth of his seventh child, Gia, with girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

"I mean, there's no way around it with kids. I don't like to have to lay down the law and stuff like that. But, [sometimes] you just have no choice," he said of his parenting style. "Any parent would say the same thing. You always want to do the right thing by the children and give them the benefit of the doubt but sometimes you can't."

The legendary actor is due to resume his decade-spanning collaboration with Martin Scorsese later this year, with Killers of the Flower Moon set to premiere on Apple TV+ in October.
