Romesh Ranganathan opens up about "embarrassing" Idris Elba moment
Romesh Ranganathan has opened up on the "embarrassing" time he first met Luther star Idris Elba.
Ranganathan, who is the co-host of the 2023 BAFTA TV Awards alongside Rob Beckett, spoke to the Radio Times ahead of the event – with the comedian and TV presenter recalling the awkward encounter at a previous ceremony.
Asked if he ever gets "starstruck" when meeting other celebrities, he recalled the incident.
"I met Idris Elba at the first BAFTAs I came to and I got very starstruck around him. I tried to do banter and it went pretty badly," Ranganathan said.

Beckett then re-enacted the interaction with his co-host, with Beckett's Elba quizzing Ranganathan on why he was in attendance. Ranganathan ended the re-enactment by saying that he "loved Luther", to which Beckett as Elba simply said, "Right. Thanks."
"And he didn’t say anything else?" Beckett questioned, to which Ranganathan replied: "No, I mean he didn’t say exactly the things that you said."
The pair then went on to share their thoughts on Elba's most recent outing as Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun, both admitting that they "loved" the film.

Nominations for this year's BATFA awards were released earlier this year, with Martin Freeman's The Responder and Ben Whishaw's This Is Going To Hurt among the favourites.
Cillian Murphy and Gary Oldman join Freeman and Whishaw in the 'Leading Actor' category. While Billie Piper, Imelda Staunton and Kate Winslet are up for 'Leading Actress'.
