Malaysia’s national broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), is negotiating the rights to air the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in Qatar, and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This was confirmed by RTM director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman, to Twentytwo13 this morning.

Suhaimi, however, did not reveal the amount that will be spent on securing the rights to air the two major events.

Insiders had earlier told Twentytwo13 that RTM was already in the process of purchasing the rights to air the regional football competition and that the Summer Games is “part of the list of rights to purchase for 2024”.

Those in the thick of negotiations lamented about the “ridiculous sum”, especially for the Olympics. Malaysia hopes to clinch its first-ever Olympic gold medal in Paris.

The national football team, guided by South Korean Kim Pan-gon, will kickstart its Asian Cup campaign by playing Jordan on Jan 16, followed by Bahrain (Jan 20), and tournament favourites South Korea (Jan 25), in the group stages.

Malaysia, meanwhile, will bank on its shuttlers and cyclists, among the elite few, to stand on the podium at the Olympics, which will begin on July 26.
