Russell Brand Reportedly Questioned by U.K. Police in Relation to Alleged Previous Sex Offenses

London's Metropolitan Police told PEOPLE in a written statement that a man "was interviewed under caution by detectives," though it did not name Russell Brand

Russell Brand is meeting with law enforcement in London amid ongoing police investigations into multiple allegations of sexual offenses made against him, according to the BBC and The Times of London.

On Monday, London's Metropolitan Police department confirmed to PEOPLE that a man, understood to be Brand, 48, was interviewed at a South London police station last Thursday in relation to the investigation.

"A man in his 40s attended a police station in South London on Thursday 16 November 2023," the Metropolitan Police told PEOPLE in a written statement Monday. "He was interviewed under caution by detectives in relation to three non-recent sexual offences. Enquiries continue."

Representatives for Brand did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment, but he has repeatedly denied the allegations against him.

Brand, an actor and comedian best known for his role as fictional rock star Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, has faced increasing scrutiny since a joint investigation published in September by The Sunday Times, The Times and U.K. current affairs show Dispatches featured five women (one of whom was 16 at the time) who accused Brand of rape, sexual assault and physical and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013.

Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police's headquarters, confirmed in September that detectives launched an investigation into allegations of sexual offenses described as "all non-recent." The department did not mention Brand by name at the time.

After initial allegations against Brand were published, the actor shared a video on Instagram Sept. 16 in which he described the allegations made against him as "extremely egregious and aggressive attacks" and said he “absolutely refutes” those claims.

On Oct. 2, a second U.K.-based police department in Thames Valley also appeared to open a separate investigation into Brand after it "received new information in relation to harassment and stalking allegations dating back to 2018," per a statement shared with PEOPLE at the time.

"This information is being investigated; as such it would be inappropriate to comment on an ongoing investigation," Thames Valley Police said in a written statement. The department did not mention Brand by name at that time.

“These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies," Brand said in his Sept. 16 Instagram video. "And as I’ve written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous. Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual.”

In September, Brand was also accused of exposing himself to a woman and then laughing about it on while broadcasting his BBC Radio 2 show in 2008, as BBC News reported. The outlet reported that BBC management was informed about the incident in 2019, though no formal action was taken.

On Nov. 4, an anonymous woman filed a lawsuit against Brand in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Suffolk County, in which she alleged Brand sexually assaulted her in a bathroom and exposed his penis to her on the set of Brand's 2011 movie Arthur. Brand has not publicly addressed that lawsuit.
