Windows shattered in Kharkiv school after Russian strike

Russia destroyed more than 900 schools, hospitals and churches in Ukraine, which are under the protection of the Geneva Conventions, in the period from Feb. 24, 2022 to December 2023, The New York Times reported.

At least 106 hospitals and clinics, 109 religious objects (churches, temples, mosques, monasteries), and 708 educational institutions (schools, colleges, and universities) were destroyed.

The New York Times's estimates were "deliberately conservative" - therefore, actual destruction scale was likely to be worse than what the analysis could confirm.

Russia destroyed about 210,000 buildings in total in Ukraine, mainly along the front line, which stretches for almost 1,300 km.

Journalists and scientists analyzed satellite images of every building in the country that was damaged or destroyed during two years of full-scale war.

The city of Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast, which first was besieged, and is now under Russian occupation, suffered the greatest destruction.

Kharkiv, Maryinka, Rubizhne, Bakhmut, Irpin, Zaporizhzhya, Orihiv, Kherson, Nova Kakhovka, and Oleshki are among other cities having suffered complete or significant damage by Russian troops.
The sea ports of Reni and Izmail were ruined as well.

Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, and Chernihiv also suffered significant destruction as a result of missile attacks.
