‘Rust’ First Photos Show Late DP Halyna Hutchins’ Visual Aesthetic On Alec Baldwin Western

EXCLUSIVE: The first images from writer-director Joel Souza’s Western Rust starring Alec Baldwin have emerged. Deadline has the first look.

Late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ visual style can be seen in two of the photos: the one of actress Frances Fisher in the doorway, and one of the lone rider to the right of the screen.

The other three photographs are the work of DP Bianca Cline, who took over for Hutchins when the production resumed in April 2023 at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. The restart came 18 months after Hutchins was killed by a bullet from a prop gun held by Baldwin that discharged during rehearsals on Rust‘s New Mexico set.

Rust is based on a story developed by Souza and Baldwin: A 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, is taken on a violent, harrowing journey to old Mexico by his long-estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Patrick Scott McDermott, who plays the movie’s protagonist Lucas Hollister, is also shown in the photos.

Rust counts Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, as its executive producer. Grant Hill (Tree of Life, Titanic, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions) produced. The new production also counted safety officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan (Tenet Production Safety).

On Oct. 21, 2021, Halyna Hutchins died and Souza was wounded on the Santa Fe, NM Rust set, after Baldwin was informed by the movie’s AD it was a “cold gun” he was holding during rehearsals. Baldwin was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter along with Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed in January 2023; Baldwin’s charges were dropped in April 2023. New Mexico special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis were planning to recharge Baldwin back in the fall, but nothing new has come to light, with the Oscar-nominated actor’s lawyers calling the prosecution “misguided.”

At present, only Gutierrez-Reed is facing charges. She has pleaded not guilty, with a case set to go to trial in February.
