Santos allowed to visit Poconos while awaiting trial
Former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) will be able to take summer trips to the Poconos while he awaits his federal fraud trial this fall, according to new court documents.
U.S. District Court Judge Joanna Seybert granted Santos’s request to make trips to Mount Pocono in Pennsylvania, specifically to Tobyhanna, Pa., per a court document filed Tuesday.
The former congressman is also allowed to travel within New York City, Long Island and Washington, D.C., along with other places if he gives the government advanced notice, per the documents.
The Hill reached out to Santos’s attorney for further comment.
The New York Republican is facing 23 federal felony counts of wire fraud, identify theft and other campaign finance charges. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and is slated to stand trial in September.
Santos was expelled from the House last year, making history as the sixth lawmaker to be booted from the lower chamber. His departure followed a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee that found he “violated federal criminal laws.”
Despite his fall from the House, the embattled Republican briefly launched an independent House bid against Rep. Nick LaLota (R) in New York’s 1st Congressional District but has since dropped it.
