Sara Ramírez files for divorce 3 years after announcing split from husband Ryan DeBolt

According to court documents, the couple separated in 2018.

Sara Ramírez is moving forward with their split from husband Ryan DeBolt.

The And Just Like That star, who uses they/them pronouns, has filed for divorce from their spouse, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. Ramírez and DeBolt married in 2012, and the documents list the date of separation as January 2018.

Ramírez announced in July 2021 that they and DeBolt were "no longer together," in a since-deleted Instagram post. "We remain loving and supportive in how we are choosing to forge our new individual paths," they wrote, per Out Magazine. "Thank you for holding space around our choices and respecting our families' privacy as we navigate this process on our own terms."

Representatives for Ramírez didn't immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment Wednesday.

After making their screen debut with a brief role in You’ve Got Mail and playing small parts in projects like Spider-Man and Chicago, Ramírez rose to fame in the original 2005 Broadway production of Spamalot, in which they played the Lady of the Lake. Ramírez then spent 11 seasons playing Dr. Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy, ultimately leaving the show after its 12th season. They later played Kat Sandoval in 36 episodes of Madam Secretary.

Ramírez's best-known character in recent memory was Che Diaz, the standup comedian who served as the primary love interest for Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) on the first two seasons of Sex and the City sequel series And Just Like That. Che was perhaps the most significant new character on the show, though they ultimately exited the series ahead of its forthcoming third season.

Ramírez's exit from the show came shortly after they called out Hollywood as a "duplicitous" industry in a now-deleted Instagram post criticizing entertainers' silence on the conflict in Gaza. "While they give awards away, casting directors and agents are making black lists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians and Gaza to ensure they will not work again," Ramirez wrote in January. "While they lift up some of their own clients who have spoken up against this genocide, they are firing and letting others who have smaller platforms go."

Some fans speculated that Ramírez was hinting that they'd been fired from the show for their position on Gaza; however, Variety reported that sources close to the show indicated that Che's time had naturally come to an end, and that Ramírez's exit had nothing to do with politics. (Additionally, Nixon has been one of Hollywood's most outspoken advocates for Palestine in recent months, and her status as a lead on the show remains unchanged.)
