Sarah Jessica Parker’s Go-to 3-Ingredient Breakfast Shocked Us

She's also a fan of our favorite butter.

Certain foods feel very New York. Cheesecake. Pizza. Black and white cookies. And, of course, bagels. Ask any local about their favorite bagel order and chances are high that they’ll have strong feelings. (As someone who called Queens home for two years, I can confirm that this is at least true based on my experience!)

If you ask Cynthia Nixon, the actor who played Miranda on “Sex and the City” and reboot “And Just Like That…,” something as simple as a bagel order can become quite the controversy. Her request at Zabar’s for a cinnamon-raisin bagel with cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers, and tomatoes nearly broke the internet, with some media outlets declaring it “highly controversial,” a “crime against humanity,” and an “abomination.”

Her co-star Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Carrie) has a more classic, and yet, still creative one. Much like SJP’s three-ingredient comfort food dinner—and Carrie’s penchant for cupcakes and Cosmos—Parker’s go-to deli order has serious crowd-pleasing appeal.

Parker herself clued us in about this in her delightful January 2021 Grub Street Diet, which chronicled her menu diary-style from Thursday to Sunday for one week while Broadway theaters—and much of the television and movie communities—were shut down due to the pandemic. She admitted that it was a rarity to have a leisurely morning.

“I have weird eating habits. I don’t usually eat breakfast unless I’m shooting, and when I’m shooting, I have a full, massive, crazy breakfast. When I’m home and going to work on my own, I’ll get up really early and just have coffee,” Parker wrote.

That doesn’t mean she takes food lightly. Parker and her husband, actor Matthew Broderick, adore cooking and she still counts her lucky stars that she can afford to fill her pantry and refrigerator.

“From the time I was 18 and I was on my own, I was like, I can’t believe I can go to the grocery store and buy what I want. So I’ve always had this thing about food meaning success,” Parker said. “I can pay my bills; I can help people outside of my family who need it. I go to the grocery store and this, oh, this is success.”

Confirming that “we love food in this house,” Parker waxed poetic about Broderick’s bolognese, his three–times-per-week bean-soaking routine, and their dream duo dinner (his Italian sausages with her Greek-inspired lemon potatoes).

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Go-to Bagel Order

As for breakfast, she opted for a banana and coffee one day; a sampler platter of cottage cheese with a soft-boiled egg, mango, and avocado on another; and on Saturday, it was bagel time.

Her go-to venue: Bagel Buffet. The order: A toasted bagel topped with Kerrygold butter “wall to wall,” she said, “and I added Grey Poupon mustard and four slices of Boar’s Head salami. My son, husband, and I love salami. Love salami.”

She didn’t specify the kind of bagel, but after perusing Bagel Buffet’s menu for inspiration and reflecting on the seasoning elements of salami (I love it, too!), I’m going to opt for the garlic or everything bagel to set the scene for this easy SJP-inspired breakfast:

  • Butter (which counts as a “freebie” in our ingredient count since many homes stock it)

  • Dijon mustard

  • 4 slices salami

And just like that, I have my new bagel sandwich combo.
