Savvis to invest S$100M in second Singapore data centre
Singapore’s red-hot data centre industry has just received a shot in the arm when Savvis announced plans to build its second data centre in Jurong East.
According to a media statement Thursday, the IT infrastructure services provider will be investing S$100 million in the new 53,000-square-foot facility, located 17 kilometres west of Savvis’ existing data centre.
Construction of the new data centre, dubbed SG2, starts in March and is expected to be completed in September 2012. A full suite of colocation, managed hosting, cloud computing and network services will be offered through the new data centre, which will meet strict banking and financial regulations for data centre facilities.
Mark Smith, managing director, Savvis Asia, said: “Asia, particularly Singapore, is fast becoming a springboard for businesses abroad to expand into and broaden their market reach, providing Savvis the opportunity to accommodate the escalating IT services demands”.
“With the launch of SG2, the combined CenturyLink-Savvis infrastructure will create a formidable presence globally with 50 data centres and a floor space of more than 2 million square feet,” he added.
In 2011, Savvis merged with CenturyLink in a US$3.2 billion deal that signals a rush among providers of managed and hosting services to jostle for a slice of the enterprise cloud pie.
According to consulting firm BroadGroup, Singapore’s data centre capacity will increase 50 per cent from 2.4 million square feet in 2010 to 3.6 million square feet in 2015.
Apart from Savvis, companies such as Tata Communications, Verizon, Amazon and NTT Communications have also established data centres in Singapore, thanks to the country’s global connectivity, educated workforce and pro-business policies.
Singapore’s data centre capacity is expected to be boosted further next year with a new 12-hectare data centre park that promises ready-built facilities such as an integrated chilled water and power plant.
