SB19's Felip criticizes crab mentality in new single 'Bulan'
Felip, also known as Ken from SB19, has released a single, "Bulan", performing the song for the Grammy’s Global Spin series.
While Ken is the stage name he uses as part of boy band SB19, the singer, who was born Felip Jhon Suson, uses the name Felip for his solo releases.
Felip is the first Filipino artist to be featured on Global Spin.
Here's the performance:
The hip hop-influenced piece, which contains Visayan lyrics, makes a commentary on modern life through the myth of the Bicolano moon deity, Bulan.
Felip uses the story of Bulan as a metaphor for crab mentality. The lyrics tell us not to be consumed by others' negative reactions when we gain success in life.
As Ken of SB19, Felip is the main dancer and lead vocalist of the boy band.
“Felip embraces his hip-hop influences into the track, adding aggressive beats and a rhythmic, rapping vocal line. The song marks an expansion of some of his previous forays into various genres, but turns the R&B of past singles like ‘Palayo’ into something more hard-edged,” said Global Spin’s Carena Liptak.
SB19 recently made it to Twitter Philippines’ “Top Music-Related Handles in the Philippines” and the “Top Hashtags Around Music in the Philippines” lists, according to the microblogging platform’s internal data from May 31 to June 1, 2022.
SB19 earlier partnered with computer manufacturer Acer and footwear maker adidas to prepare Filipino students for their return to face-to-face classes for the first time in two years. The group performed their song "Live It Up" as a message to individuals to reconnect with each other as well as to show the two brands' attempts to be more environmentally-friendly.
SB19 were the first Filipino and Southeast Asian artists nominated for the Top Social Artist in the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, alongside BTS, Blackpink, Seventeen and Ariana Grande.
