Scared of the Dark star Chris McCausland has answered a question that has plagued viewers of the reality show since it began.

The new Channel 4 show, hosted by Danny Dyer, sees a number of stars complete a series of tasks and challenges over eight days, all in complete darkness.

Ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne, former professional boxer Chris Eubank, and Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt are among the stars taking on the challenge, as well as comedian McCausland who has been spilling some behind-the-scenes secrets about the show.

Since Scared of the Dark began, many at home have wondered why the stars have worn masks while going to sleep at night – and McCausland has provided the answer.

He said in a Twitter post: "The eye masks in bed on #ScaredOfTheDark are in case there is an emergency in the middle of the night and they have to put the lights on quickly, would be very damaging to peoples eyes. Well, everybody else’s.

"But they still made me wear mine as well."

The comedian, who lost his sight due to a degenerative condition called pigmentosa, recently spoke about how the show will help the public understand sight loss.

He told The Guardian he believes the show will "create an amazing level of awareness of what it’s like to come to terms with not being able to see anything".

"I think if you’d had a pitch from C4 for a show that creates awareness of being blind, I think it would’ve been absolutely awful... and condescending," he continued.

"For me it was really interesting that I would get to live with people who were being made to be blind... It really gave me the experience of being the most able out of everybody for a while."

Host Dyer previously described the show as "an insight into Chris' world", who has been shown aiding the other contestants in getting to grips with a lack of sight.

The Sandman star Donna Preston, who is among the stars in the show, was also seen opening up on a rare condition that could cause her to lose her sight, which influenced her decision to join Scared of the Dark.

She told Moffatt on the show that she has surgery three times a year to release fluid from her brain due to the condition.

"The main reason why I chose to do this because of this condition, because one day I might lose my eyesight," she shared.

Scared of the Dark premiered on April 16, with an episode airing each night until April 20 on Channel 4.
