Scream 7 has now lost its director Christopher Landon, following the departures of both Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.

Landon, whose previous credits include Netflix's family horror We Have a Ghost as well as two Happy Death Day movies, announced on Saturday (December 23) that he actually left the latest instalment in the Scream franchise some time ago.

"I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago," Landon wrote on X/Twitter.

"This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on.

"I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes [Craven's] legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world," the filmmaker's post continued.

"What he and Kevin [Williamson] created is something amazing and I was honoured to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow."

Landon had previously been confirmed to succeed Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who rebooted the franchise, as director on the seventh movie.

As previously mentioned the seventh Scream movie will be without Barrera, who was dropped from the project, reportedly over social media comments made about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

In a statement following reports of her exit, Barrera said: "First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.

"As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need."

Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in 2022's Scream and its follow-up Scream 6, added: "I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me."

Ortega's departure from Scream 7, due to scheduling conflicts, was reported a day after news of Barrera's exit first broke.

However, it was reported that talks about continuing the film series without Ortega and her character Tara Carpenter had been underway even before the SAG-AFTRA strike started this summer.

This is because the filming schedule for Wednesday's second season was expected to clash with plans for Scream 7.

The Scream movies are streaming on Paramount+.
