Search Continues for Girl Who Went Missing at Michigan River Where Boy Drowned the Day Before

"The problem with this river is that it's so dangerous and it's filled with hazards," shared Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson

Search and rescue crews in Michigan are continuing the search for a young girl believed to have fallen into the Flint River, one day after a young boy drowned there.

According to Facebook video posted by Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, the boy died on Saturday, April 27.

"A 7-year-old boy, a special needs boy wandered away and drowned. There was a number of agencies that tried to rescue, and ultimately, it turned into recovery," said Swanson in the video posted Sunday, April 28.

Later in the video, Swanson said that the "tragic scene" was "repeated again today" noting that there was an active scene taking place after a young girl fell into the river that same day after she also "wandered away."

In a follow-up video on Monday, April 29, Swanson confirmed that the girl had not been found yet. While she was identified as an 8-year-old girl at the time, the sheriff's office told USA Today on Wednesday that her correct age is 6.

The girl slid down a cement bank into the river while playing with a nine-year-old, Swanson told USA Today. The nine-year-old was able to climb out, but the girl went underwater while the river was "moving five to eight miles per hour."

"The problem with this river is that it's so dangerous and it's filled with hazards, trees, and water that goes under the banks where a body can hide and rest," explained Swanson in Monday's video.

"The divers have a lot to consider. We had rain last night, and there's rain coming in today. These are all the things we're considering and we're working," he later added.

Swanson said that the search for the young girl is a "long-term commitment," noting that some of the resources involved include boats, drones, and a helicopter.

"The science behind it, with air temperature, water temperature, and the size of the victim, that all plays into where we look and into what level of water," he continued. "And to be sensitive to the family, just know that we're using all of our data and our experience."

While the sheriff noted that the search for the young girl is "far more dangerous and more difficult" due to it being in a moving body of water, he added, "We're in it for the long hall whether it be hours, days, or weeks."

Recovery efforts will continue into Thursday, reports WJRT.
