A portion of road near Wheatley's Lake Erie shoreline is being relocated, realigned and reopened after being closed for nearly five years due to erosion.

The section of Talbot Trail between Coatsworth Road and Stevenson Road has been shut down since the summer of 2019 because of a regressing and unstable bluff slope.

Chatham-Kent council unanimously approved an interim route that will relocate the road further northwest at a cost of roughly $4 million. This includes nearby property acquisition, design and roadwork construction.

Work could get underway in 2025.

The municipality's long range plan is to construct a new two-lane rural arterial roadway from Ellerbeck Road to Stevenson Road, following the existing 2nd Concession Line.

An appeal to the province for erosion funding will also be made by the mayor.

Talbot Trail used to be a provincial highway.
