Kyle MacLachlan is looking back on his time as Dr. Trey MacDougal.

Speaking with PEOPLE, the actor, 65, reflected on playing Trey, the first husband of Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) on the hit HBO show Sex and the City. MacLachlan notes that renewed interest in the show — in large part due to its arrival on Netflix earlier this year — has led to more conversation about his character.

“There's been a resurgence, for sure, in people's talking about Trey and all of his difficulties,” MacLachlan says.

Charlotte and Trey, an Upper West Side cardiologist, dealt with various conflicts before their divorce, including Trey’s overbearing mother, Bunny, and the couple's differing views on having children. Trey also experienced impotence issues throughout the marriage.

“It was a very difficult subject to sort of get into, and we tried to treat it with an equal mix of humor, of course, because you have to make a joke about it,” MacLachlan says. “But also more, a little more serious once in a while about the effects of something like that, the real effects of something on a marriage like that and how the two people deal with it or don't deal with it, as the case may be. So there was some real reality in there as well.”

Though Trey stopped appearing on Sex and the City after season four — and MacLachlan, who previously starred in the ABC mystery series Twin Peaks, would move on to projects like Desperate Housewives and Fallout — the actor is very aware of the show’s devoted fanbase years after its 2004 series finale.

“People really love that show,” he says. “It has stayed around and, not unlike Desperate Housewives, people really enjoy that show. And of course now with Sex in the City being back, there's a renewed interest of people going back.”

“There's a new fan base for me, a younger fan base, which is really what's found the show,” he adds. “A lot of the younger fans that found the show actually [found it] from older friends, or parents, or siblings, that sort of exposed them to it when they were younger, or now that they're actually of the age when they can really get it.”

“It's all whatever the creatives in the show — and they're all brilliant — whatever they think,” he says. “We'll see what happens. But I have such fond memories of working on that show and working with Kristin Davis. She's just delightful and everybody on it…It was a fun time.”
