Sex Education season 4 spoilers follow.

Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn has broken down Otis and Maeve's ending while teasing a possible reunion.

During its fourth and final season, Sex Education reunited Emma Mackey's Maeve and Asa Butterfield's Otis, bringing Maeve back to Moordale after a brief stint in the US where she was pursuing her dream of becoming a writer.

Following the fleeting reunion of two of the show's main characters, Maeve decided that her love for Otis wasn't enough to keep her in the country and, after a chat with Otis' mum Jean, Maeve decided to go back to the States to follow her dreams.

Speaking to Variety about Maeve's decision to leave, series creator Laurie Nunn said she never considered keeping the couple together and that she always knew where their story would end.

"I've always known they wouldn't stay together. I find that almost more romantic: the idea that they have had this huge effect on each other's lives, they've really changed each other for the better, but this isn't the right moment," Nunn explained.

While the couple may have cut ties romantically for now, Nunn teased a possible reunion for the pair somewhere down the line.

"I’ve always thought maybe they would meet each other again in a 10-year reunion or something," said Nunn. She added: "And that might be the right moment for them to explore a proper adult relationship."

Describing how the Netflix show left things between Otis and Maeve, Nunn said that despite the couple's heartbreak, Maeve made the choice to focus on her future.

"At this moment, she really has to focus on her own goals. I like that we leave her in a place where she's going to thrive and they're left in this heartbreak, but it's a happy-sad heartbreak."

Sex Education seasons 1-4 are available to watch on Netflix.
