Welcome to the Earth Month series, where we highlight environmentally-focused food offerings as well as inspiring stories by people in Southeast Asia, to help you celebrate our planet.

These days one of the best places to shop sustainably is in someone else’s closet, and one of Singapore’s best closets is going on the auction block on Sunday, 18 April.

One of Singapore’s top auction houses, Hotlotz, is holding a fabulous fashion opportunity to get your hands on some top fashion from the 80s and 90s in pristine condition.

There are some amazing iconic fashion pieces for sale, including a limited edition Chanel timber cruise trunk bag from 1994, a vintage Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche skirt suit from the late 1980s, and Dolce & Gabbana embellished black velvet jacket with matching bag and waistcoat. These are fashion gems that are not to be missed.

Prices are remarkably reasonable, with reserves starting around S$200 and ranging upwards to S$5,000 for very rare items like the Chanel bag. But there are 223 lots to choose from, so you are likely to find an item and a price range that suits you.

The current owner of the wardrobe up for sale says that every piece of her collection brings back “wonderful memories of afternoon teas and fashion shows in those years where life was lived in a more leisurely manner”.

“These are precious items that I hope will give their new owners as much joy as they have given me,” says the owner.

Many designer luxury brands that feature in the auction were bought straight off the runways in the 80s and 90s when many designers held trunk shows in Singapore and before the brands opened their stores. These are unique pieces of the country’s fashion history.

“This sale not only represents exceptional style and exquisite one-off pieces, but it showcases the heritage of the Singapore fashion scene before it burgeoned into the retail destination it now is,” says Matthew Elton, Managing Director of Hotlotz.

The Designer & Luxury – One Woman’s Wardrobe Auction online bidding is currently running here, and will close at 6pm (SGT)/ 10am (GMT) on Sunday 18 April 2021. The buyer’s premium is 24% of the hammer price. Viewing is at the Hotlotz saleroom, 120 Lower Delta Road, Cendex Centre, #01-15, Singapore.
