Should I'm A Celebrity have a break from politicians on the show after Ant and Dec's plea?

When Nigel Farage was announced as one of this year's I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! campmates, some thought the ITV show had taken its controversial casting a little too far.

Now, the reality contest's hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have admitted they do not want to see any more politicians in the jungle for a while, following a headline-grabbing couple of years which included Matt Hancock joining the I'm A Celebrity cast in 2022.

In an Instagram live Q and A with fans on Saturday, one person asked Ant and Dec whether prime minister Rishi Sunak could potentially be a campmate in years to come.

But Dec said: "I think we do a year without any politicians," as Ant added: "Agreed, agreed, agreed."

Former UKIP leader Farage sparked suggestions for a viewer boycott before the series began as people expressed outrage over him joining the cast because of his comments about immigrants during his political career, and his alleged £1.5 million fee for appearing in the jungle.

Since arriving in camp, YouTuber Nella Rose has pulled him up on his immigration comments, accusing him of wanting people like her "gone" from the UK and they have also fallen out over cultural appropriation.

First Dates' Fred Sirieix has also fallen out with Farage over his Brexit campaign, which the French star explained was offensive to him.

There were also calls for an I'm A Celeb boycott in 2022 when sitting MP and disgraced former health secretary Hancock signed up to the show.

Viewers complained that his casting was in poor taste coming so soon after the Covid pandemic, where his decisions about care home residents proved controversial and he was then caught breaking his own social distancing rules by having an affair at work with his aide, Gina Coladangelo.

Other 2022 campmates including Boy George, Charlene White and Chris Moyles spoke about their discomfort at being put into the same camp as Hancock, while viewers were angry at his plea for forgiveness in one episode.

While Farage and Hancock have caused the greatest outcry over their casting, they are not the only politicians to have been signed up for I'm A Celebrity.

Back in 2012, there was criticism of Nadine Dorries joining the TV show cast while she was still working as an MP.

The 2017 cast included two ex-politicians - Kezia Dugdale, former leader of the Scottish Labour party, and Stanley Johnson, a former MEP and the father of now ex-prime minister Boris Johnson.

Other political campmates featured have been former Conservative MP Edwina Currie in 2014, and former MEP and TV presenter Robert Kilroy-Silk in 2008.
