Sian Welby has revealed the birth of her baby did not go to plan – as she ended up having an emergency caesarean section.

The This Morning presenter announced at the weekend that she and her fiance Jake Beckett had become parents to a baby girl called Ruby. And Welby, 37, appeared on the ITV daytime show to share further details about the birth and be congratulated by hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

Welby – who announced she was pregnant live on her Capital Breakfast who back in February 2024 – revealed she had hoped to have a water birth. She told Shephard and Deeley: "I originally was planning to have a water birth, because obviously you can try and plan what you're gonna have, but then it boils down to what's the safest way. And in the end I did actually have an emergency C-section. But I felt so safe."

She added: "And this is where, we have the most incredible NHS, and they just look after you. I just said I will do whatever is the safest delivery for this baby. I just want what's best for them."

She went on: "I was in amazing hands and and the midwives are just incredible. If any midwife is watching now - you are a different breed of human. I just want to thank you, because the work they do and the way they treat you like you're the only patient. And yet they've probably dealt with 30 other people already, and they're exhausted, and they're always smiling at you, and they make you feel so at ease. I can't thank them enough."

Welby revealed that she and her finance had chose their daughter's name quite early on in the pregnancy, and had been calling her bump Ruby ever since.

Asked how they chose her name Welby said: "Weirdly, we found out the sex at the 20 week scan, and it was one of those names where we said it out loud, we both liked it, and actually, we were calling the bump Ruby from then. So she was always Ruby. We we had it in our heads from 20 weeks. So the second she came out, we both just went, 'Ruby!'. "

Welby said seeing her fiance Beckett being a father had made her fall in love with him all over again.

She gushed: "He is such a natural. You do fall in love with your partner all over again because you just see them in a different light. He's just been so brilliant. He's taken over when he needed to, he's supported me when I was emotional. And he's just, I can't say how good he's been because it's just been phenomenal. And he's loving it. You can tell he's absolutely besotted with his little Ruby."

Welby also revealed Beckett is on the 'witching hour' shift when Ruby wakes in the middle of the night, so she can get some rest. She said: "We're taking it in turns, and he picked the shift he wanted it, I didn't force him into it. But he's getting that time of night when she does kick off a little bit, it's almost midnight 'til two is when she goes a little bit wild."

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
