It’s A Sin star talks versatility in new showBBC

It's a Sin star Callum Scott Howells has opened up about his aim to show audiences how versatile he is as an actor with his role in the new BBC drama The Way.

Howells is best known for his breakout role in Russell T. Davies' It's a Sin, in which he played Colin. Now, he's starring in The Way.

Co-created and directed by Michael Sheen, The Way follows the Driscoll family as they get caught up in the civil unrest in their Welsh town and face having to leave their home.

Howells plays troubled Owen Driscoll and, in a new interview with Radio Times, has opened up about this shiny new role, comparing it to It's a Sin's Colin.

"I love Colin, and yesterday I think was three years since It’s a Sin came out. So looking back was so crazy, because I feel like I was a different person then, a different actor," Howells said.

"But Owen’s a lot more spunky I guess, and he’s a lot more of a kind of badass. And that's what I kind of loved doing in this role, is trying to prove people wrong and show people that I can do more."

Howells said that he draws inspiration from his The Way co-star Sophie Melville, whose career he would like to emulate as she "constantly does different things".

"And I think that's always what I've aspired to do. So I just want to keep doing different things and keep kind of learning, really. And being proven wrong, you know what I mean?"

He continued: "That's what I love about this craft, is that you think you can only do one thing, but actually you might be able to throw yourself into something altogether that you wouldn't have expected to do."

The Way will be available in full on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday, February 19, and airs on BBC One at 9pm with episodes airing weekly.
