However, there remains challenges for Singapore to overcome in order to provide greater support for women entrepreneurs

Singapore has been named in the top ten list of cities for women entrepreneurs, according to a new report by tech giant Dell and IHS Markit.

Ranking at number eight, Singapore became the only Asian city to have made it to the top ten list with Hong Kong following in the top 20 list at number 16.

Built on the past six years of Dell’s research on “high-performing” women entrepreneurs, cities were ranked on five important characteristics: capital, technology, talent, culture, and markets.

Announced during the ninth annual Dell Women Entrepreneur Network Summit (DWEN) in Toronto, the report also highlighted the actions that cities can take in order to improve the ecosystem for women entrepreneurs.

While Singapore “does particularly well” in creating policies that can help impact a supportive culture for women enterpreneurs and provide capital, as well as in safety and security, it needs to work on the areas of market and talent.

It also scored well below the median score for policies to ensure fair pay and gender discrimination upon hiring.

Though it does not have policy to ensure “equal remunerator for work of equal value,” the country does have a policy for paid maternity leave and is among the majority for having paid paternity leave policy.

“Women’s entrepreneurship rates rose globally by 13 per cent in 2017, reflecting broader momentum of increased female representation across the public and private sectors in many regions around the world. However, access to capital and technology, as well as cultural and political barriers, continue to limit the success of women-owned businesses,” said Karen Quintos, executive vice president and chief customer officer at Dell, in a press statement.

In addition to Singapore, other Southeast Asian cities that have made it to the top 50 list are Kuala Lumpur (#44) and Jakarta (#50).
