Singapore schools on the move: Kranji Primary to head to Tengah, Outram Secondary set for Sengkang relocation
Shifting demands for school spaces is the key reason for such strategic relocation plans, says the Ministry of Education
SINGAPORE — Kranji Primary School is scheduled to move from Choa Chu Kang to Tengah in 2028, while Outram Secondary School will be relocating to a new campus in Sengkang by 2026, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Tuesday (16 January).
These relocations are part of the the ministry's broader plan to adapt to Singapore's evolving demand for school and preschool spaces. Last February, MOE had revealed plans to open a new primary school in Tengah and a new secondary school in Sengkang.
In addition to these school relocations, MOE also announced the upcoming opening of two MOE kindergartens - one in Tampines North and another in Bukit Batok.
Primary schools relocating and new openings in Tengah and Tampines North
Kranji Primary School's relocation to Tengah will mean there will be two primary schools in the Tengah region by 2028, with Pioneer Primary School set to move from Jurong West to the new housing estate in 2026. Anglo-Chinese Primary School is also anticipated to open its doors in Tengah by 2030.
MOE explained in its media release that the decision to relocate Kranji Primary School was influenced by a surplus of school places in the northern part of Choa Chu Kang, where the school is currently situated. The area already houses three other primary schools – Yew Tee, De La Salle, and Unity.
To facilitate the transition, Kranji Primary School will stop accepting Primary 1 students from 2025. The school will continue operations at the current location until all existing students graduate by the end of 2029. Siblings of current students will be unable to register for Kranji Primary School.
Parents interested in enrolling their children in Primary 1 at Kranji Primary School's Tengah campus can participate in the registration exercise in 2027.
Outram Secondary School to relocate to Sengkang in 2026
Meanwhile, Outram Secondary School is set to relocate from its current York Hill campus to Sengkang in 2026, In response to the higher demand for secondary school placements in the northeast region. MOE said that the school's current location is also in a mature area where the demand for secondary school places is falling.
To minimise disruptions, the school will not admit new Secondary 1 students in 2025, and will resume accepting new Secondary 1 students in 2026 at its new Sengkang campus.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the school will continue to operate on both campuses until 2027, when the last batch of Secondary 4 students at the York Hill campus is expected to graduate in that year.
MOE also announced opening a new primary school in Tampines North in 2029, responding to the growing number of families in the area due to the completion of Build-to-Order projects. Further details about the new primary school will be announced at a later date, according to the education ministry.
Upcoming kindergarten expansions in Bukit Batok and Tampines North
Two new MOE kindergartens are scheduled to open in Bukit Batok and Tampines North in 2028 and 2029 respectively.
The new MOE kindergarten in Bukit Batok will be situated within the premises of Bukit View Primary School's new campus. Registration process will open in 2027 for Kindergarten 1 pupils in the following year.
Specific details about the new kindergarten In Tampines North will be disclosed at a later date, and it will share the location with the new primary school.
Meanwhile, the MOE kindergarten currently located in Kranji will be relocating to the Tengah in 2028, at the same site as Kranji Primary School. The institution will stop accepting Kindergarten 1 students from 2025 and will remain operational until the end of 2025.
Operations at the new Tengah campus are set to begin in 2028, and parents interested in enrolling their children at this facility can register during the 2027 kindergarten registration exercise.
The MOE kindergarten located at Blangah Rise in Bukit Merah is also set to close by the end of this year. Established in 2014 as one of the initial five MOE kindergartens, it has witnessed a fall in preschool demand in the area over the years. As a result, it has halted the acceptance of Kindergarten 1 applications.
MOE said that there are sufficient government-supported preschool places to meet the overall demand in the Bukit Merah region.
