Singapore teams shine at Shell Eco-Marathon 2014

Singapore's student engineers bagged a total of five awards at the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014, which was held this year in Manila on February 7 to 9.

The Eco-Marathon, which is in its fifth running this year in Asia, is a competition whereby student engineers compete to produce vehicles that can go the furthest distance on just one litre of fuel.

A total of four teams from Singapore entered the competition this year, with two hailing from the Institute of Technical Education West Campus (ITE West), and the other two coming from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The four teams were up against more than 100 other teams from all over Asia, and in total managed to bag a total of five awards over the course of three days. Team iTerbo 3, from ITE College West, managed to come in first in the Urban Concept - Battery Electric category that they competed in.

Team Nanyang E Drive, from NTU, won the competition's Off-Track Award for Technical Innovation, with the judges commenting that the entry won because of "their use and placement of an electromagnetic clutch to eliminate most drive-train losses when coasting, and for incorporating a splitter to separate turbulent and laminar flows to reduce drag."

Finally, Team NTU Diesel car scored a total of three prizes, taking home the Off-Track Awards for Vehicle Design and Safety, as well as the runner-up prize in their on-track category, the Prototype - Diesel class. Their innovative wood-constructed vehicle managed to achieve a fuel consumption figure of 338.3 kilometres per litre during the race.
