The only thing Adam Mac wanted for his birthday was another French bulldog. He got that — and a fiancé to boot.

The 34-year-old LGBTQ+ country music artist is newly engaged to his longtime love, Lee Pfund, and he's sharing how the surprise proposal unfolded with PEOPLE.

“My boyfriend was very passionate that we could not have another dog,” Mac says. “We already had a French bulldog by the name of Priscilla, but when I saw that there were puppies born from Priscilla's sister, I knew I wanted one.”

On Jan. 30, Mac’s dream came true — in more ways than one.

“When we got home from getting our new dog, Pearl, [Pfund] put a collar on her and told me to turn around,” Mac recalls. “He was on one knee, and I could see Pearl’s little collar dangling there. On one side, it said, 'Will you,’ and the other side said, 'Marry me.’ I was just like, 'Are you for real?' "

"And then I cried. And then we kissed," he continues. "I was so overstimulated. I didn't think the puppy was going to happen, and I certainly didn't think it was going to lead to a proposal.”

The moment was a long time coming, as Mac and his now-fiancé have been together for more than seven years.

“We actually met at CMA Fest in 2017,” the Kentucky native remembers of Pfund, who works as a real estate broker in Nashville. “Lee wasn't even really a country music fan, but his mom had dragged him to that show that night. They saw Maren Morris, and he fell in love. That was kind of what really got him into country music.”

After the show, Pfund went out to a bar with mutual friends, and fell in love yet again. “The next thing we knew, it was 3 a.m. and we went to The Diner, which is this place downtown near Printers Alley,” recalls Mac, jokingly adding of Pfund, “It was love at first veggie burger. We both ordered veggie burgers.”

Mac says the two have been pretty much inseparable ever since, having lived together for the past six years. “We're the weirdest f---ing people,” Mac admits with a laugh. "That's what we love about each other. I feel so lucky to have found someone as weird as I am, because we are just obsessed with each other.”

And as far as Mac was concerned, they didn’t have to get engaged. “Honestly, I was totally fine with just living our happy life,” says the "Boy Like Me" singer. “I have given [Pfund] some s--- over the past couple of years about how we were never going to get married."

He continues, "But even when we first started dating, Lee would always say that marriage was not really a thing that he even looked towards or anything, because I think that we just grew up knowing that it was not an option.”

But since it is now an option, it has been something on Mac’s mind.

“We went to Mexico over New Year's Eve with some friends, and I kind of thought if Lee was going to propose to me then,” he admits. “And then when he didn't, it was just kind of off my radar. So then when he did ask, I was just totally blown out of the water. I could not believe when it happened the way it happened.”

Now, the couple are busy planning a summer wedding. “We always kind of felt like if we ever got married, we would just go elope to one of our favorite places, which is Sedona,” says Mac, whose album Disco Cowboy came out last year.

“So, what we really want to do is go out to the desert, get married, and spend a few days there just soaking up all the love. And then, we will come back to Nashville and just do a big reception for all our family and friends.”

It’s a union that Mac looks to celebrate for years to come. “He is the brains,” Mac explains of his fiancé. “He is the one who keeps me grounded on this planet when I'm drifting into outer space in the creative world. We are partners in all things."

He credits Pfund for helping him evolve and shape his life in meaningful ways.

"In the last seven years, when I've figured out all the things about who I am and what kind of artist I want to be — all those things can be directly tied to him in some way. I just love him and I'm so thankful for him. I can't believe that he is my fiancé now," he says.

So, could children be in their future?

“We think that these French bulldogs are actually our children,” Mac jokes. “To be honest, I think it's all I can handle.”
