'The Sky is Horrible:' Red Haze from Bushfires Envelops Nowra

A massive fire in New South Wales, Australia, forced locals and holiday markers to flee to beaches along the south coast on December 31.

The out-of-control Currowan fire has burned 230,000 hectares between Nowra and Batemans Bay, shrouding some coastal towns in darkness. This footage shows the scenes in Nowra, located 160 kilometres south-southwest of Sydney, on Tuesday.

The NSW Rural Fire Service warned people in Nowra that it was “too late to leave” the area. Credit: @GenuinePang via Storyful
