Slovenia vs Serbia LIVE!

Serbia substitute Luka Jovic headed a last-gasp equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in an entertaining Group C clash at Euro 2024 on Thursday.

A brilliantly worked goal from right-back Zan Karnicnik had given Slovenia the lead and put them on the brink of their first ever Euros win before Jovic nodded home a corner five minutes into added time to leave their opponents distraught.

Slovenia missed several good chances before Karnicnik drove upfield from the edge of his own penalty area, released the ball to Timi Elsnik and then met a beautiful return cross to slot past Predrag Rajkovic in the 69th minute.

Serbia failed to capitalise on periods of superiority despite the menace of veteran striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who saw a close range shot deflected by Karnicnik onto the woodwork, until Jovic struck. The result in Munich put Slovenia in second place on two points with group leaders England to come in their third and final Group C game. Serbia, bottom with one point, face Denmark next.

Thanks for joining us in today’s live blog!

Slovenia had qualification for the Euro 2024 knockouts snatched from their grasp on Thursday by Luka Jovic’s 96th-minute header for Serbia.

Jan Oblak produced his trademark heroics in goal to set the stage for right-back Zan Karinicik to score what looked like a Slovenian winner midway through the second half.

However, Serbia’s late onslaught paid off with substitute Jovic expertly guiding a corner home with the last move of the match.

Mijat Gacinovic is booked for barging over Erik Janza as Jan Oblak collects the ball and the Serbian fans resume the throwing of beer cups onto the pitch.

Luka Jovic booked for dissent as Slovenia prevent a quick Serbian free-kick by the halfway line.

Succession of corners for the Serbs, Jan Oblak punching the second before a sweet volley goalwards is well blocked.

OFF THE POST!

Serbia straight up the other end and Aleksandar Mitrovic gets across his marker to hit the corner of post and bar!

NO 0-0 HERE!

Zan Karnicnik pops up at the far post having won the ball and switched the play, with a superb cross tapped home unmarked!

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 68 mins

15:25 , Marc Mayo

We’ve not had a 0-0 at Euro 2024 yet...

Group C is looking like it could be one of those groups where the winner has seven points and two goals with zero conceded.

Slovenia look to change their fortunes and Petar Stojanovic goes down too easily in search of a penalty. No dice.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 65 mins

15:23 , Marc Mayo

Slovenia denied what would have been a soft foul in the Serbia D before a counter leads to Aleksandar Mitrovic lashing a snapshot over the bar.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 64 mins

15:21 , Marc Mayo

Changes are afoot.

Jan Mlakar is off, he’s been quiet after an early chance, with Jon Gorenc Stankovic on in a defensive-minded change.

Luka Jovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic are two big names on for Serbia. Off go the booked Sasa Lukic, who looks particularly gutted, and Dusan Vlahovic.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 58 mins

15:16 , Marc Mayo

The early story of the second half has been Serbian pressure and they’re camped in Slovenia’s half before Dusan Tadic has a good cross cut out.

Up the other end and Benjamin Sesko forces a lovely stop by Predrag Rajkovic!

Now Aleksandar Mitrovic heads over from Dusan Tadic’s whipped ball in.

A very strong start to the half from Serbia.

Erik Janza is on the turf and needs treatment. Useful timing for Slovenia.

Another decent Slovenia display

15:05 , Marc Mayo

Slovenia have certainly been worthy of this stage and, just like the first game, are doing so much right but struggling to take their chances.

Jan Mlakar went through early on to force a save and Timi Max Elsnik hit the post, before Benjamin Sesko skied the rebound.

A point wouldn’t really be enough in their ambitions to reach the knockouts and it’s fair to say that they’ve edged the first half in Munich.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 47 mins

15:05 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

The new man has gone out to the left wing-back position where Serbia have had some real issues all tournament.

It’s straight through the middle where they launch a first attack of the half and Aleksandar Mitrovic is through... Jan Oblak makes the save!

Kick-off!

15:02 , Marc Mayo

AEK Athens midfielder Mijat Gacinovic comes on for Filip Mladenovic as Serbia make a change at the break.

Serbia yet to fire

14:59 , Marc Mayo

It took 28 minutes for Serbia to have a shot in this game, yet they are getting Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic more involved.

The biggest problem has been their dreadful ball retention inside their own half.

A sizeable improvement at the break, just as they managed against England, is required even if a draw isn’t a terrible result.

Watch Slovenia hit the woodwork

14:54 , Marc Mayo

The best chance of the first half.

Half-time!

14:46 , Marc Mayo

Andrija Zivkovic finds space down the right before settling for a corner.

The same player crosses from a short routine and Aleksandar Mitrovic heads wide on the stretch. A difficult chance.

And that’s the break!

One added minute.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 44 mins

This game has truly opened up now and gone fully end-to-end.

Sasa Lukic has a shot blocked for Serbia before a counter wins a corner for Slovenia.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 42 mins

14:42 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Aleksandar Mitrovic with Serbia’s biggest opening by far, he collects a cross and holds off his man but Jan Oblak smothers his shot from close range!

Half a chance VAR would have ruled it out for offside anyway.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 40 mins

14:39 , Marc Mayo

Free-kick chance for Serbia up the other end.

Dusan Vlahovic fires into the wall and volleys the rebound... into the wall.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 38 mins

14:38 , Marc Mayo

OFF THE POST!

Huge chance for Slovenia as Timi Max Elsnik breaks from midfield, beats a challenge and rattles the woodwork.

It lands to Benjamin Sesko with a few defenders on the line... he shoots over!

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 37 mins

14:36 , Marc Mayo

Andrija Zivkovic is furious with his teammates for being left isolated against a pair of Slovenian attackers on Serbia’s right. The wing-back has been targeted a fair bit during this half.

A long throw goes into the Serbian box. Cleared.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 33 mins

14:33 , Marc Mayo

Slovenia have certainly learned from England’s errors and are enjoying great success with a high press on Serbia’s backline. Another good win fails to yield a chance, though.

Into the second quarter of the game and this game’s finely in the balance.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 31 mins

14:31 , Marc Mayo

CLOSE!

Serbia’s first corner is superbly whipped in by Dusan Tadic and Aleksandar Mitrovic can’t bundle it home at the far post - only a yard out too.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 28 mins

Serbia waking up a bit here with a slick move down the left.

In comes a cross and Dusan Vlahovic hits the target with their first effort, flicking a header straight at the keeper.

Another deep cross from Erik Janza... too easy for the keeper.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 20 mins

14:20 , Marc Mayo

A couple of dangerous Slovenia balls into the box are dealt with.

A bit of an old-fashioned game this, with both teams’ primary route to goal coming via crosses from out wide to big men in the middle.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 16 mins

14:16 , Marc Mayo

Erik Janza, the Slovenia scorer in the first game, lofts a deep cross from his left-back spot... over the head of the attacker.

Still waiting for this game to ignite.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 8 mins

14:08 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Good control from Slovenia winger Jan Mlakar cutting into the box and he shoots across goal, but it’s turned wide by Predrag Rajkovic.

The short-corner routine is played to a pair of runners, both of whom leave it for the other and Serbia clear.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 4 mins

14:04 , Marc Mayo

First chance for Benjamin Sesko to get involved and a neat turn is stamped out, before Slovenia misplay a ball wide and concede a throw.

Serbia give it away and Adam Gnezda Cerin shoots straight at the keeper.

Slovenia 0-0 Serbia | 2 mins

14:01 , Marc Mayo

Positive stuff from Serbia early on and Aleksandar Mitrovic is nearly picked out with a cross from the left wing.

They’re set up in a 3-4-2-1 with Dusan Vlahovic and Dusan Tadic floating around Mitrovic. Slovenia are keeping their two big men up front in a 4-4-2.

Slovenia vs Serbia | Kick-off!

Matchday two comes to Group C with Slovenia, all in white, up against Serbia, all in red.

It’s the Slovenians who get the ball rolling and we’re underway in Munich!

Time for the national anthems

13:57 , Marc Mayo

First up we have the meaty ‘Boze pravde’ of Serbia before ‘Zdravljica’ of Slovenia, who are geographically the smallest nation at Euro 2024.

Big anthem, though, and lots of fans representing both teams at what looks like another sell-out match.

Here come the teams!

Man in the middle

13:45 , Marc Mayo

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs takes charge of today’s game.

The 39-year-old has officiated in Liga I for almost two decades and joined UEFA’s elite list in 2019.

Among his top assignments so far are the 2022 Europa League final and last month’s Europa Conference League final. A contender to go deep at this Euros, perhaps.

England keep a close eye on Munich

13:40 , Marc Mayo

There is plenty of England interest in this game between their Group C rivals, while of course all the immediate attention is on this evening’s match against Denmark.

The Three Lions face Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday so this game will make up the bulk of their homework on Matjaz Kek’s team.

There is also some interest in how Serbia play. If the Serbs completely flop here, England’s struggles against them will look a bit stark but a good performance suddenly lightens up the assessments of that narrow win.

Slovenian fans making themselves heard

Serbia told to go for it

13:28 , Marc Mayo

Aleksandar Mitrovic has called on Serbia to keep on the front foot having enjoyed much more success with a positive mindset against England, compared to their defensive start to that game.

"If you ask me I'd like to attack and keep the ball for 90 minutes," Mitrovic said.

"I'd like to keep attacking.

"This is the match we are living for. Good opponent. Full stadium. Whoever is going to come on to the pitch will do the maximum."

Serbia must not make the same mistake twice, says coach

13:15 , Marc Mayo

Serbia head coach Dragan Stojkovic will not let his side repeat the mistake they made against England when they play Slovenia.

Stojkovic believes his side showed England too much respect in their Group C opener and has vowed that things will be different in Munich.

Stojkovic said: "I think against England we started playing with too much respect, as if they came from another planet.

"It should not be like that, then we played against them the full match and that's how we're going to play against Slovenia as well.

"[Slovenia] are a very well-organised team, a very tough team. The system they play is not a surprising one, but we have to take care and think about those elements that we have already spoken about."

Three changes for Serbia

13:08 , Marc Mayo

One enforced and two tactical changes to the Serbia XI.

As we knew, Filip Kostic misses out due to injury so Filip Mladenovic and Greek club Panathinaikos enters the line-up on the left flank.

In midfield, Dusan Tadic returns and there is a starting berth for Torino’s Ivan Ilic as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Nemanja Gudelj both drop out.

Slovenia stick with same XI

Not a huge surprise to see Slovenia go with an unchanged line-up this afternoon.

Benjamin Verbic again among the substitutes as he returns from injury.

How Slovenia's tournament began

12:50 , Marc Mayo

If Serbia’s game was a nervy chess match of a game, Slovenia and Denmark went hammer and tong at each other in a thrilling 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Christian Eriksen’s early goal was cancelled out late on by Erik Janza’s deflected strike.

Slovenia were well beaten in terms of possession but almost matched Denmark for shots, 11 to 16, although both struggled to make the most of their openings.

How Serbia's tournament began

12:44 , Marc Mayo

Serbia’s opener was one of the quieter games of Euro 2024 so far.

They managed just one shot on target in a 1-0 defeat to England, who weren’t at their best but held onto an early lead provided by Jude Bellingham’s header.

A more positive second-half display worked well for the Serbs but England’s strong defence kept them at bay fairly comfortably.

'Aggressive' attitude key for Slovenia

12:38 , Marc Mayo

Slovenia head coach Matjaz Kek believes his side will need to fight to the end against Serbia.

"We know already 11 players tomorrow will not be enough because of the high tempo and because of the aggressiveness," said Kek, whose side started with a 1-1 draw against Denmark.

"We are thinking about how to keep a high tempo in 90 minutes for an opponent like Serbia.

"The rivalry is big, of course, but we already know Serbia is a very good opponent. We will have a very difficult match tomorrow but we always try to focus on ourselves and what we can do."

Serbia hit by UEFA sanctions amid boycott claim

12:28 , Marc Mayo

UEFA fined the Albanian and Serbian football federations €10,000 (£8,500) each on Wednesday for fans displaying banners with nationalist maps at Euro 2024.

Each federation was charged with “transmitting provocative messages not fit for a sports event”.

Albania fans displayed a banner with a map of their country extending its borders into the territory of neighbouring countries during the 2-1 loss against Italy on Saturday in Dortmund.

The Serbia fans' banner included the independent territory of Kosovo and a slogan “No Surrender” at their 1-0 loss against England in Gelsenkirchen. A case was prosecuted by FIFA at the 2022 World Cup when players were photographed with a similar banner in their dressing room ahead of a game against Brazil.

UEFA also opened a separate investigation into alleged racism against England players by Serbia fans. The Kosovo soccer federation has also filed a formal complaint to UEFA.

The Albanian federation was fined a further €27,375 (£23,100) for fans lighting flares and fireworks, throwing beer cups and a fan who went on the field.

Serbia's federation must pay €4,500 (£3,800) more for fans throwing beer cups.

Serbia threaten to boycott Euro 2024

12:05 , Marc Mayo

Serbia have threatened to pull out of Euro 2024 if alleged offensive chanting by Albania and Croatia fans is not punished.

Supporters from both sides have been accused of singing anti-Serbian songs during yesterday’s game in Hamburg, which ended as a 2-2 draw.

Reports claim Albania and Croatia fans could be heard chanting “kill, kill, kill the Serb” and the the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) have demanded action be taken by UEFA.

“First of all, I want to thank our fans for their support in the match against England and I hope we will beat Slovenia,” general secretary of the FSS, Jovan Surbatovic, is quoted as telling Serbian broadcaster RTS by the Telegraph.

“What happened is scandalous and we will ask Uefa for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition.

“We will demand from Uefa to punish the federations of both selections. We do not want to participate in that, but if Uefa does not punish them, we will think how will we proceed.

“We were punished for isolated cases and our fans behaved much better than the others.”

In an apparent reference to the illicit banner, he added: “One fan was punished for racist insults and we don’t want it to be attributed to others.

“We Serbs are gentlemen and we have an open heart, so I appeal to the fans to remain gentlemen.”

Serbia are currently under investigation themselves by UEFA after allegations England players were subjected to monkey chants during their match on Sunday.

Serbian and Albanian fans also clashed in Gelsenkirchen in the afternoon of Serbia’s game with England on Sunday.

Neither team looked like potential dark horses for a deep run into the tournament in the opening week.

Early Serbia team news

Dusan Tadic was surprisingly left out of the Serbia lineup against England but should return on Thursday to add some more attacking impetus, despite criticising manager Dragan Stojkovic’s decision not to start him on Sunday.

Aleksandar Mitrovic departed after only an hour following a quiet display but should remain in the XI, though Juventus winger Filip Kostic is out with a knee injury.

Filip Mladenovic should come in.
