SMNI News, the controversial news outlet owned by Apollo Quiboloy, has been flagged by Facebook for violating the social media platform's community standards.

Attempts to like SMNI's Facebook page now will cause the following message to pop up: "This Page has shared posts that violate our Community Standards. Review posts on this Page before liking it."

The Facebook page currently has over 550,000 likes and more than a million followers.

SMNI, the church broadcasting arm of pastor Quiboloy, has a reputation for posting disinformation and making online attacks against media and activists who are critical of President Rodrigo Duterte. Quiboloy is a longtime friend and spiritual adviser of Duterte.

After media giant ABS-CBN was shut down by the government in 2020, SMNI was given usage of the company's broadcast frequency. President Duterte had often accused ABS-CBN of being biased against him and threatened to shutter the broadcaster.

Quiboloy, the founder of the Davao-based church Kingdom of Jesus Christ, is currently wanted in the US for alleged crimes that include sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion, sex trafficking of children, visa fraud, bulk cash smuggling, and money laundering.

At the same time, another Facebook page that was associated with the Marcos camp was also flagged by Facebook for violating community guidelines.

The Facebook page of director Darryl Yap, VinCentiments, had posted a video with Senator Imee Marcos that made veiled insults against Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo.

Activists and academics have warned about massive online misinformation campaigns in the lead-up to the elections in May. Presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his team were accused of employing such misinformation campaigns to garner support in the electoral contest.
