Sophia Loren Steps Out for Lunch with Friends Months After Fall at Swiss Home

The Oscar winner, 89, appeared in good spirits as she grabbed a bite in West Hollywood on Wednesday, May 29

Sophia Loren appears to be in good spirits as she was spotted out with pals this week!

The 89-year-old Academy Award winner grabbed a bite to eat on Wednesday, May 29 at Cipriani in West Hollywood, Calif., where she was photographed smiling and surrounded by onlookers. Her outing comes over eight months after a fall at her home in Geneva, which left her hospitalized with multiple fractures followed by what her manager called a "few months" of recovery.

During the lunch, the Two Women star smiled at fans as she wore a pair of stylish rose gold glasses, a blue-black-and-white leopard print blazer, white undershirt and black slacks. She completed the look with a black-and-white dotted walking stick, and made her way to her vehicle as fans photographed her with their phones.

Loren's rare outing comes several months after she ended up getting surgery on fractures to her femur and hip following her accident on Sept. 24, 2023. Days later, Loren's manager, Carlo Giuisti, confirmed to PEOPLE that "everything [is] going well." He added that "at least a few months of rehabilitation are needed."

Loren's two sons — Carlo Ponti Jr., 55, and Edoardo Ponti, 51 — were by her side following the incident, her manager said at the time, as they spent some time with her in Switzerland. Giusti then told PEOPLE on Sept. 26 that the procedure went “extremely well” and she was “slowly recovering.”

In November, Giuisti shared another update on his client's condition, revealing that Loren's recovery was going "very well."

Since then, Loren attended the Damiani Centenary gala dinner at Teatro Alcione on March 14, 2024 in Milan. There she was photographed with the likes of Jessica Chastain and members of the Damiani family.

Prior to her fall, the Marriage Italian Style actress has previously opened up about age in her interviews, telling W Magazine in 2016 that at age 20, she "didn’t think that one day I would live to 80."

"But you do," she said. "You think, ‘My god, all this time went by? I can’t believe it.' "

Speaking with AARP: The Magazine in 2020, Loren revealed that she couldn't believe she was nearing 90. “When I look in the mirror, I cheer for myself. I don't ask, ‘Are you great?’ or ‘Are you beautiful?’ No! It's how I feel inside, how secure I am, how happy I am. That's what matters,” she said.

Before her fall, Loren was seen out on Sept. 2, 2023 at the Armani fashion show during the 80th Venice International Film Festival. There Italian journalist Giuseppe Fantasia described her as appearing "very lively."

“You can tell she loves these events, she’s really happy at them," he told PEOPLE. "She carried herself extremely well. People were quite excited to see her. She was quite the pull."
