Sophie Turner’s new jewel thief show is “awards bait”, says TV boss

Sophie Turner's anticipated new ITV drama Joan has received high praise from a top Hollywood TV boss.

The new series sees the Game of Thrones star play real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington, focusing on her transformation from small-time thief into criminal mastermind during the 1980s.

The CW entertainment chief Brad Schwartz has now revealed that he has seen previews of the series, saying that Turner is "phenomenal", while also teasing a release date in the first half of 2024 in the US.

“That is going to be awards bait, that show," he said on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast. “The dailies look amazing, Sophie Turner is phenomenal… I’m really, really excited about that one.”

Turner's transformation in Hannington has been teased in a number of set filming pictures, with the star sporting a number of '80s looks.

Joan will document Hannington's life starting in her 20s as a "fiery, uncompromising, and intoxicating character" who is in a toxic marriage to a violent thug and mother to a 4-year-old.

She leaves her old life when he goes on the run, and makes use of her "sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance" in her career as a thief.

“I’m so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," Turner previously said. "She is one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname 'The Godmother'.

"A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime.”

Joan will air on ITV and be available to stream on ITVX.
