South Africa beats Netherlands by 6 runs
CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (AP) — South Africa overcame a spirited Netherlands team to beat them by six runs in the World Twenty20 on Thursday.
The Netherlands raised the prospect of another upset but was finally bowled out for 139 in response to South Africa's 145-9.
Stephan Myburgh, who produced a whirlwind knock to stun Ireland, made 51 to keep Netherlands in contention. But JP Duminy finally got him after hitting seven fours and two sixes, and Imran Tahir then ripped through the Dutch's middle order.
Tahir grabbed a career best 4-21, dismissing Wesley Barresi and captain Peter Borren as his quicker delivery proved tough to negotiate for the inexperienced Dutch players.
Dale Steyn had figures of 2-19 but missed the catch of Timm Van der Gugten when the Netherlands was 134-9 and needed just 12 off 14. However, Beuran Hendricks then dismissed Gugten on 8.
Earlier, Netherlands pace bowler Malik Ahsan Jamil claimed a career best 5-19 to hold South Africa to a moderate total.
Hashim Amla was the highest scorer for South Africa with 43 off 22, including seven fours and one six. Amla's presence in the wicket kept South Africa in track despite they lost Quinton de Kock on duck in the first over.
Jamil started his wicket haul by taking out Amla. Maintaining an accurate line and length, he created a sustained pressure on South African batsmen.
Tom Cooper and Logan Van Beek utilized the pressure to remove Faf Du Plessis (24) and AB de Villiers (21) to leave South Africa in a troublesome position.
Jamil removed big hitter Albie Morkel while JP Duminy, who revived the South African innings against New Zealand, failed to make same impact as Timm Van der Gugten dismissed him on 12.
In his last over, Jamil got Beuran Hendricks and David Miller to complete his five-for.
Tom Cooper, Timm Van der Gugten, Michael Swart and Logan Van Beek grabbed one wicket apiece.
