South Korean Dota pro Forev announces break from competitive play

South Korean Dota 2 pro player Lee “Forev” Sang-don announced that he will be taking a break from competitive play, in the midst of the first season of the 2021 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC). due to “personal issues”.

In a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday (3 February), Forev said he would be focusing on himself as well as his business, a studio where he works as a media producer, which has been hit hard by the worsening coronavirus pandemic in South Korea.

“I’m still gonna focus on playing Dota 2 but not that much,” he said.

Prior to announcing his break, Forev was playing as the offlaner of Team HOYO in the lower division of the DPC’s Southeast Asian regional league.

Forev’s teammates in Team HOYO include former T1 players, Galvin "Meracle" Kang Jian Wen and Tri "Jhocam" Kuncoro, as well as former Motivate.Trust Gaming players, Poomipat "Fearless" Trisiripanit and Anurat "boombell" Praianun.

As of the time of writing, HOYO is sitting at a 1-2 record in the league with four matches left to play.

DPC rules state that teams can only play with a stand-in for up to four matches, the same number of series that Team HOYO will now have to play following Forev’s break from competitive play.

With that said, Forev added that if his team needs to him to return to play in the event of a tiebreaker, then “I will do my best to help them.”

“Thanks to my teammates for understanding me getting off from the team. I'll be back stronger,” said Forev.

Forev is one of the most prolific players to have come from South Korea. He was notably a member of the MVP Phoenix squad that finished in the Top 6 of The International 2016, the furthest any South Korean team was able to reach in the illustrious tournament.

Following his time in MVP Phoenix, Forev bounced between Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, having played for the likes of Team Secret, Digital Chaos, Immortals, and J.Storm, among others.

In August 2019, Forev was announced as the founding member of the Dota 2 squad of T1, the most high-profile esports organisation in South Korea.

He then parted ways with the organisation last July before forming Team HOYO for the return of the DPC at the start of the year.

As of the time of writing, Team HOYO has not yet announced who will be standing-in for Forev for the remainder of their matches in the DPC.
