South Park's latest special, Joining the Panderverse, has been announced with a trailer ahead of its release later this month.

The trailer features Cartman, Butters, Stan and Kenny recast as older women of colour, with Kyle asking PC Principal "How does this make any sense?"

The question is, will the show take aim at diverse recasting in general or the mishandling of it?

The special's official description makes no direct mention of this: "Cartman's deeply disturbing dreams portend the end of the life he knows and loves. The adults in South Park are also wrestling with their own life decisions as the advent of AI is turning their world upside down."

This will be the fifth of 14 specials (or "exclusive events") that were ordered by Paramount+. It's not yet clear whether this will be the first of two parts like the previous specials.

The show's 26th season aired earlier this year on Comedy Central and is streamed exclusively on HBO Max in the US, and is part of a complicated legal battle (via AV Club).

An episode of that season - Deep Learning - also tackled AI, with ChatGPT credited as a co-writer alongside Trey Parker.

Meanwhile, a new South Park game was announced back in August. South Park: Snow Day is an online co-op game in which you'll get to beat up the kids of the town.

Visually, it's a departure from the previous two games — The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole — in that it's using 3D character models.

South Park: Joining the Panderverse airs on Paramount+ in the US and Canada on October 27, and will come to the UK a day later.
