'Southpaw' Star Jake Gyllenhaal is an Old-School Gamer

At 34-years-old, Jake Gyllenhaal is a true child of the ‘80s. And if you don’t believe that, go challenge him to a match in the old Nintendo game Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!!.

The actor stars as the boxer Billy Hope in this weekend’s new release, Southpaw, and so Yahoo Movies asked him to weigh in on which other fictional boxers he might want to face in the ring. Rocky was off the table — “Rocky always wins,” he explained — and then chose to face off against King Hippo, the ridiculously large brawler in the 1987 NES video game.

“I know actually how to defeat King Hippo,” he revealed. “I know the combinations.”

Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal’s co-star Miguel Gómez, who plays his rival in Southpaw, figured it’d be worth taking a beating from The Italian Stallion if it meant the biggest possible payday. Not a bad strategy.

Southpaw is now out in theaters.
