Spencer Grammer Mourns Her Stepfather's Death in a Heartfelt Tribute: He 'Taught Me Unconditional Love'

Spencer Grammer is mourning the loss of her stepfather, Dr. Bill Skinner.

On Monday, July 8, the Rick and Morty star, 40, announced that her stepfather had died earlier this week. Alongside a photo of the two smiling at dinner with her son, Emmett, Spencer paid tribute to him on Instagram.

"I’ve never been very open about my private life," she began in the caption. "But the man I consider as my father and the man who taught me unconditional love is a man by the name of Dr. Bill Skinner."

She went on to explain that she's known him "since I was 5 years old" and when he married her mother Doreen Alderman, "he signed up to be my Dad too."

"Even though he and my mom went their separate ways, he still showed up as my Dad," Grammer continued. "He has been there for me my whole life…no matter what I needed. He was there. I always got to be his kid. He always gave me a hug, always listened, always believed in me, and always supported me."

"He left us this week and our hearts are broken. I wanted to spend so many more years with him," she added.

The Greek alum revealed that the selfie was "one of the last we took together" and noted her tendency to "always forget to take pictures" while spending time with "people I love."

"A part of me is missing now. Truly deeply missing," she said. "For those friends who were lucky enough to have known him or have met him, you know the kindness and generosity he spread and how much he meant to me. It’s a constant reminder to always make time. We lost him too soon."

Spencer concluded her post by addressing her late stepfather and thanked him for "being in my life" and loving her "no matter what" even though she wasn't "always the best daughter."

"I’m beyond grateful to have known you. I’ll miss you so much," she added.

Spencer is the oldest daughter of Kelsey Grammer. Though the two are now on good terms, their relationship has been strained at times over the years — especially after he split from Alderman, when she was a toddler.

After starring together in a Lifetime holiday movie, 12 Days of Christmas Eve, Kelsey told PEOPLE how the two were able to repair their relationship in November 2022.

"I certainly regret I let her down a couple of times," Kelsey said, explaining how work took him away from his young family after he was cast on Cheers in 1984. He noted that the role and the sudden 20-hour workdays changed everything at the time. "Obviously she was a child of divorce," he said of Spencer. "It was hard on us."

He added, "I feel sorry about it, but I'm also thankful that we had a chance to make amends."
