Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse delayed indefinitely

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been officially held up.

Variety reported that Sony Pictures had been making changes to its forthcoming release schedule as a result of the strikes in Hollywood, which started with the writers' guild and have now expanded to include the actors' union.

Beyond the Spider-Verse, the direct follow-up to this year's Across the Spider-Verse, was originally scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.

The third and final instalment in the animated series has now been delayed, with no updated release in place as yet.

The ongoing strike has meant that actors haven't been able to get into the booth to finish recording.

Spider-Gwen actress Hailee Steinfeld told The Hollywood Reporter back in June that she hadn't begun recording the dialogue, although she did say sessions for the second film took place across four years, so perhaps some recorded scenes have been held back for the third entry (or she's just messing with us).

Across the Spider-Verse ended with Miles trapped in a universe where his dad had died, rather than his uncle Aaron. And in that universe, without a Spider-Person, Miles has become the villain, Prowler.

Co-director Kemp Powers explained the third film would obviously pick up from the cliffhanger ending, but "it's not going to be as simple as [Miles] wanting to just escape this world.

"He's going to try to do right by people who he feels he's done wrong by, and that just felt more potentially emotional and unpredictable as we go into the third film."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still playing in some cinemas now.
