Sony has pulled Spider-Man spinoff movie El Muerto from its release schedule.

The film, which is set to star Bad Bunny as antihero Juan-Carlos Estrada Sánchez (making him the first Latino character to lead a live-action Marvel movie), was previously scheduled to be released on January 12, 2024.

However, Sony Pictures announced on Wednesday (June 21) that the Jonás Cuarón-directed project has now been removed from its theatrical release calendar (via Deadline).

It's been reported that El Muerto is still in development, but the ongoing writers' strike and Bad Bunny's tour dates make rescheduling and finalising the release date complicated.

With El Muerto no longer on the Sony slate, The Book of Clarence, a LaKeith Stanfield-led biblical epic that was set for a September 22, 2023 release date, has taken its place.

El Muerto isn't the only Spidey project to have recently been delayed, as it was previously announced that Spider-Man 4 has been put on hold due to the writers' strike.

"We're in the process, but [with] the writers' strike, nobody is working during the strike," Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal explained. "We're all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we'll get started."

In the meantime, Sony's Kraven the Hunter movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson will arrive later this year, while a Madame Web film starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney is will swing into cinemas in early 2024.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is available to buy now on Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and other digital retailers. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out now in cinemas.
