“Squid Game” actor found guilty of sexual misconduct in South Korea
Oh Young-soo, who played Player 001 on the popular Netflix series, was accused of inappropriately touching an actress in 2017.
Oh Young-soo, the Squid Game actor who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of contestant 001 on season 1 of the globally popular Netflix series, was found guilty of indecent assault in a South Korean court on Friday, according to the New York Times.
An unidentified actress accused Oh of inappropriately touching her on multiple occasions in August and September 2017, which included kissing her cheek and making sexually inappropriate comments. Oh was convicted of indecent assault and given an eight-month suspended sentence.
Judge Jeong Yeon-ju also ordered him to attend 40 hours of classes on sexual violence. Oh publicly denies the accusations and said he plans to appeal.
Representatives for Netflix did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
Even before Squid Game, Oh was known as one of South Korea's most accomplished stage actors, appearing in more 200 plays since 1968, with several awards to his name. But Squid Game, where he played a wily older contestant on the deadly game who conceals elements of his true identity from the other players, rocketed Oh to international fame. He became the first South Korean actor in history to win a Golden Globe for his performance, and was also nominated for an Emmy.
But his career has suffered since prosecutors officially charged him in 2022. Oh is not part of the cast for Squid Game season 2, set to hit Netflix later this year, and was also dropped from the South Korean play Love Letter.
