Star Awards 2024: Xu Bin, one of the Dukes of Caldecott Hill, shocked he wasn't nominated for Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes

In order to qualify for the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes award, an artiste must meet specific criteria, which Xu Bin had failed to in 2023.

Xu Bin may be one of the Dukes of Caldecott Hill, but he’s not above the rules for the Star Awards.

The China-born Singaporean actor didn’t qualify as a nominee for Star Awards’ Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes this year, and he was clearly shocked.

In order to qualify for the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes award, an artiste must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have a lead role or be a main host in at least one eligible programme; or

  • Play a supporting role or be an episodic host (for video) or co-host (for audio) in a) at least three eligible programmes, or b) at least 30 episodes in total across all eligible programmes

And, the show needs to have aired between between 1 Jan and 31 Dec 2023.

Xu Bin, 35, was only in one local drama - Kill Sera Sera - which aired in January 2024.

He told 8days on Wednesday (20 March), “I was shocked myself, like ‘Huh, there's such a thing?’ [But] there's nothing we can do about it lor, we can only follow [the rules].”

The actor has won the award five times and said it “wasn’t easy to get to the halfway mark”. He also said that “anyone in the industry” would hope to receive it.

“I don't know when I will get to the end. This year, I was immediately disqualified,” he added.

Why actors and actresses want to win the award 10 times

An actor or actress who receives the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes award 10 times - and it need not be consecutive - will receive the All-Time Favourite Artiste award at the following Star Awards ceremony.

This year, actresses Ann Kok and Jesseca Liu will be receiving theirs.

Though Xu Bin is “disappointed”, he said he’ll have to “work harder” for the future. He’s currently filming a 15-episode drama and will be on it till June or July.

And, he does want that All-Time Favourite Artiste award.

He told 8days, “As long I'm still active in the industry, it's something I want to accomplish. After all, it really wasn't easy getting to the halfway mark."
